Entertainment The Western Carolinian Page 8 Thursday, September 28, 1989 Cast Members in a Performance of Quilters Theatre Season Opener Quilters Takes a Bow by Melissa Jenkins and Michael Jones WCU's department of speech and theatre arts closed the curtain on the last performance of Qu/7rersSatur- day night. Quilters, a heartwarming musical, tells the story of women during the time of this nation's westward expansion. According to Dr. Stephen Ayres, the play's director, "quilting was not only necessary during these times, but also had other purposes. During times of sorrow, like the death of a child, women gathered to quilt for that child. In happy times, such as a wedding, women gathered to quilt." Quilting was a method, according to Ayres, of handling emotion, when there was little of no other way of expression. "These women," Ayres adds, "worked with the men. They built the houses and they harvested the fields, since there was not enough (help) to be had." Quilting was a method of stress relief, as well as being practical. Happiness, sorrow and pain were quilted into each work. The play is narrated musical, but there is no specific narrator. All of the actresses in the cast trade off the role of story teller. The play uses women to act out the stories told by each piece of the giant quilt gracing the stage. Each piece of the patchwork tells its own tale. It is refreshing to see a live production which doesn't rely on complicated set design. The actresses do the work and in the case of Quilters, do the work well. A color screen is used to indicate mood and story changes, and the subliminal effect makes the story quite clear, without being disruptive and jumping out to say: "We're moving on to something else now!" The main character, played by Ellen Faull, is a motherly type who leads the group. As Faull laughs and cries, one cannot help but do the same with her. Also noteworthy is Dawn Darby's singing talent, which is nothing short of outstanding. The clarity of her voice is something that would have to be heard to be believed. This is a tremendous kick-off to STA's theatre season and something that should make all participants proud. The play is truly brought to life by the all- female cast. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
