  • 16 WCnewsmagazine Road to the SoCon Championship Game by Andy Gambill * Wenewsmagazine Game One- Sixth seed Western disposes of eleventh seed Wofford, 79-62 The Lady Cats cruised to victory over eleventh seed Wofford on the first night of the SoCon tournament, 79-62. Except for a small stretch in the second half which saw Wofford take a 49-47 lead with 13:10 left, the Lady Cats had little trouble disposing of the Terriers. They outscored Wofford 32-13 over the final twelve minutes of the game to win by 17 points. The Cats received strong performances by All-Conference selection Jennifer Gardner, seniors Lori Tanner and Ki-Ki Glass, and freshman sensation Chevon Keith. Gardner finished the night with 23 points and 9 rebounds, while shooting 8 of 12 from the floor. Tanner and Glass contributed strong games, too, as Tanner finished with 12 points, 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals while Glass chipped in 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals. Freshman Chevon Keith had a career game as she scored 13 points, pulled down 5 rebounds and contributed 3 assists and 3 blocks. Leading Wofford in the losing effort was Brie Bradshaw. Bradshaw scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Terriers. Also having strong games for the Terriers were Kelsi Koenig and Nakia Mister. Koenig only scored 6 points but pulled down 10 rebounds, while Mister had a solid 8 points and 8 rebounds. Game Two- Lady Cats shock third seed Furman, 66-56 What most people figured would be the final game of the season for the Lady Cats turned into one of the biggest triumphs of the year for the die-hard Cats. Aclose game in the first half28-28 at halftimeturned into a see-saw event early in the second. With the lead changing back and forth, the Lady Cats finally gained control at the 8:03 mark. Using a 12-1 run, the Lady Cats turned around the game and took the lead by 9 points. The Catamounts cruised to the finish and ended up winning 66-56 over the third seed Furman Paladins. The Lady Cats enjoyed excellent performances by seniors Jennifer Gardner, Lori Tanner and Sigita Maleraite. Gardner was her usual All-Conference self as she scored 21 points and pulled down 9 rebounds. Tanner played very tough and scored 7 points with 5 rebounds on the side, while Maleraite showed her offensive prowess by scoring : : sig , 14 points. Freshman sensation Chevon Keith came on strong for the second straight ca et cy ae ae es game as she scored 9 points and pulled down 7 rebounds. Furman was led by Jen Nadalin and Tommi Paris. Nadalin scored 18 points and pulled down 8 rebounds for the Paladins. Paris finished the night with 16 points. Game Three- Western claws past second seed Davidson, 59-58 With anything possible after beating third seed Furman, the Lady Cats made a strong comeback to barely grab a victory over second seed Davidson, 59-58. After trailing by five points with three and a half minutes left, the Cats displayed the same toughness and heart that was so evident during the regular season and came back for the victory. The Lady Cats jumped on Davidson early with a 17-9 advantage and pushed the lead to ten on a couple of different occasions. After taking a seven-point lead into halftime, Davidson finally started playing up to their potential. Davidson raced back and took the lead in the second half but just couldn't hold off the upset-loving Lady Cats. The Cats received strong performances once again from Jennifer Gardner, Sigita Maleraite, Lori Tanner and Chevon Keith. Gardner had an off game as she only scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. It's too bad most people cant consider that an off game. Maleraite chipped in 10 points and 5 rebounds, while Tanner scored 12 _ points. Chevon Keith continued her run of playing the best in the biggest games as she pulled down 9 rebounds and dished out 4 assists. Davidson only played eight players and received strong performances by most of those players. Led by Janell Craytons 14 points off the bench, Davidson was just a hair short at the end. Danielle Hemerka had 10 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals, while Katie Hamilton chipped in 9 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists. Also having strong games for Davidson were Katie Delk and Tia Washington. Delk finished with 7 points, 6 rebounds and 2 steals, while Washington put up 7 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals. Freshman Chevon Keith was on fire against Wofford, scoring 13 points during the first round of the tournament. photo by WCU OPI
