  • April 5, 2000 NEWS WESTERN CAROLINIAN SGA Elections Filled with Experience and Energy by Dawn N. Pasley Asst. News Editor On Tuesday, April 11, campus-wide elections will be held to elect the president and vice-president of the Student Government Association. Elections will be held from 9am to 5pm on the UC Lawn. Two candidates are in the running for each position. Jonathan Rowe and Bradley Lovin each met the 5pm filing deadline last Jonathan Rowe Friday, and will face each other for SGA president. The race will feature a popular incumbent against an enthusiastic challenger. In the vice-presidential race, incumbent Joe Cowan will face three-term SGA senator Robert Blankenship. Rowe, the current SGA president, will run for re-election. A senior communication and political science double major from Clemmons, he has completed many tasks during his term, such as the institution of a State of the University Address and the organization of a Bradley Lovin shuttle bus service. If he wins a second term, Rowe plans to establish an after-dark guardian escort service so that no student has to walk alone at night, and expand the shuttle bus service so that it transports students from outer parking lots to residence halls and also run from campus to parties and back again. Rowe also has plans for SGA's judicial system. "I want to increase the SGA judicial system to interact more with Housing and Student Affairs'judicial systems. It would integrate the system, making it similar to other universities." His other goals include establishing an athletic support organization similar to Duke's Cameron Crazies, and to represent students with food service prob- ems. "SGA should be the number one student support service on campus," said Rowe. Challenging Rowe for the presidential position is Bradley Lovin, a freshman secondary social sciences education major from Andrews. He has a semester's experience in SGA Senate and is involved in many organizations such as the BSU, tutoring at Scotts Creek Elementary, and Odyssey of the Mind. In addition to his campus activities, Lovin is quite active in his home community, where he serves on a tri- county task force designed to enhance youth activities in Cherokee, Graham, and Clay counties, in addition to being a member of the Cancer Board in Cherokee, and Community Youth Players in Andrews. "I feel these experiences Joe Cowan will help me to become an excellent, well-rounded SGA president," said Lovin. "I've been exposed to a variety of people at different levels." Lovin feels that student government should be more accessible to the students than it has been in the past. "It would be better if SGA did more to let students know who is representing them," said Lovin. "They should be more visible, perhaps hav- Robert Blankenship ing SGA in public once a month to be available to students who want to voice concerns." He believes that electing an upperclass- man to the presidential position is not necessarily the best solution. "A lot of the projects the university is involved in are not going to be completed in a year," said Lovin. "I think it's important to have a group of individuals who are going to be here in a few years." Cowan, the current SGA vice-president, is also running for re-election. A junior communication major from Murphy, he plans to make more changes in student life if he is selected to another term. This year Cowan was involved in efforts to dim the sign at the Wachovia interaction, investigating campus food prices, and writing other pieces of Senate legislation .
