  • August 3 LAUREL FALLS Unless you go on that fine, but hard, trip to Siler's Bald, you should let nothing interfere with your going to Laurel Falls. The hike is long enough to satisfy—but not enough to over-fatigue you. The trail is one of variety. At first it follows an old road, then parallels, and crosses the picturesque creek. Because of the great velocity with which water rushed down thru this narrow gorge, it is known as the Devil's Chute. Then, when we reach the Falls, we find the climax of the trip. It is here that we will have lunch. If time permits, some of the more ambitious hikers may want to go on up to the source of the stream, or even on to the top of Cove Mountain which we are to visit in September. Leave Saunders System at 8 A. M. Round trip hiking distance to Falls about 4 miles. Cost of transportation about $2.25 each. Bring food for one meal. Leaders: Elvie Manley (Phone 2— 1417) and Rhea Bryan (Phone 2—0338). August 16-17 ABRAMS FALLS This hike may be made a one-day trip or an over-night affair. The plans call for leaving Knoxville Saturday afternoon, but if that is not convenient for you, you may start early Sunday morning and join us before we leave Oliver's Lodge in Cades Cove. Those who go Saturday may take tents and sleep out, or may sleep in the cabin or lodge. In either event, you may cook your own supper and breakfast, or, by making advance reservations, get these meals at John Oliver's home. The views to be had from Rich Mountain are superb. Upon reaching Cades Cove, turn right (at the church) and drive about a mile to John Oliver's place. It would be difficult, indeed, to find a more nearly rdwtV site to spend the night. A campfire will complete the setting. 46
