to camp out, take blankets and tent or poncho. Lodging may be had at a cost of about $1.00 each. Cost of transportation about $2.00 each. Round trip hiking distance approximately 16 miles. Trail steep, but smooth. Elevation 5400 feet. Leaders: Sidney G. Kent, Jr., (Phone 3—3411) and Chris Van Deventer, III (Phone 2—1145). October 19 CLINCH MOUNTAIN This is one of the easier hikes; but no less interesting for that fact. One can drive to the foot of the mountain at Luttrell or Lea Springs in an hour. The height of this mountain is about the same as that of the Chihowees at Walland; but the views are superior to any yet seen in the Chilhowees. All of the Great Valley of East Ten- 'nessee is in view from the Pinnacle, the rocky point of the ridge overlooking Luttrell, to the west. Equally splendid views may be had from vantage Points on other parts of this ridge, or from the mountain just south of this one. House Mountain lies immediately to the south, while the valleys of the Holston and the French Broad rivers lie in a magnificent sweep from the east to the southwest. The smoke of Knoxville, and its surrounding ridges, are visible about 25 miles away in the southwest. The Chilhowee range bounds the valleys on the south, while the Great Smoky Mountains, from Guyot to Gregory, close the panorama. To the west and north, the broken country with the splendid valleys of the Clinch and Powell, is enclosed with the Cumberlands on the north, with Cumberland Gap dimly visible to the north at the Tennessee, Kentucky and Virginia lines. The vegetation of the Clinch mountains is diversified and interesting. The glory of the range is the purple, or Catawba, Rhododendron (mountain rose bay), which fringes the north side of the mountain ridge. Kalmia (mountain laurel) is abundant about the Pinnacle, and azalea is found, although not as abundantly since fire and visitors have done their deadly work. Huckleberries 57

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1930 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
