  • The first recorded climbs of many of the peaks in Unaka and Pisgah are undoubtedly those made by Arnold Guyot, just prior to the Civil War. In the establishment of a system of the measurement of elevations by barometer and in the development of a systematic geographic outline of the mountain system of the eastern United States, Guyot spent some ten summers climbing the peaks of the Appalachian Chain. The summers of 1856, 1857, 1859 and 1860 were devoted to the southern Appalachians. The reports of the Smithsonian Institution contain Guyot’s elaborate tables for the correction of barometrical observations; the ultimate accuracy of his work is almost incredible. That the geographical structure of the Appalachian system was a matter of only minor importance to Guyot is shown by his brief treatment of his ten years of exploration.
