  • BIBLIOGRAPHY Herewith is presented a list of books which should appeal to hikers and Nature-lovers. Most of these books can be gotten at the Lawson Mc- Ghee Library. Members of the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club will, of course, be interested in reading all those dealing with hiking or camping in the Great Smokies and the other Southern Appalachian mountains. Our knowledge of the Smokies, and our appreciation of them, can be increased by reading about the many other mountains of America, and the world. Then, we can make intelligent comparisons and contrasts. Let's learn about the Smokies thru reading, as well as by hiking. The reading of carefully selected books will help us better to plan and enjoy our hiking. Perhaps the following list may be helpful: "The Lure of the Great Smokies"—Robert Lindsay Mason "Our Southern Highlander"—Horace Kephart "Our Southern Highlander and his Homeland" —John C. Campbell "Carolina Mountains"—Margaret W. Moreley "Land of Saddlebags"—James Watt Raine "Early Travels in the Tennessee Country"— Samuel Cole Williams "The Southern Mountaineers"—Samuel Tyndale Wilson "Southern Appalachian Forests"—H. B. Ayres and W. W. Ashe "Shank's Mare"—Charles Coleman Stoddard "Mountain Climbing"—Francis Arnold Collins "Adventures of a Nature Guide"—Enos A. Mills "Trails and Summits"—Walter Collins O'Kane "The Mountain That Was God"—John Harvey Williams "A Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf"—John Muir "Steep Trails"—John Muir "California Mountains"—John Muir "Excursions"—Henry David Thoreau 72
