  • INTRODUCTION Since the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was organized in October 1924, the activities have been growing in number and in scope. This booklet portrays, in a general way, the program of hikes and other activities for this, the sixth year of the Club's existence. Following the frontispiece, those appropriate poems, the preface, Dr. Jennison's outline of the Spirit of the Hiker, and this introduction will be found interesting descriptions of the 36 hikes and get-together meetings which are scheduled for the year. These descriptions were written by the several hike leaders. These leaders have endeavored to portray the distinctive features and attractions of their respective hikes. You will see apparent conflicts with reference to the superior qualities of the various trails, waterfalls and panoramic views. These are not discrepancies or misrepresentations on the part of the leaders, but are indicative of the greatness of the Smokies and the endless variety of views and beauty spots. Go and see the places which are described and you will be in just as great a quandary as are these many leaders as to which is the finest or prettiest trail or view. Appreciation is hereby expressed for assistance of the leaders and others who helped in the planning of this program of hikes and in writing the descriptions of them. Throughout the booklet you will find pictures representative of the countless beauty spots throughout the Great Smokies. These pictures were selected from among hundreds of equally attractive views which have been made by members of the Club on various hiking trips. Several of these have never been published before. The poems which you will find were selected because of their vibrant qualities and the appeal which they make to get out into the open spaces. The program of hikes and meetings for 1930 includes some new trips and new ideas. Among the new trips are included the hikes to Mt. Nebo, 8
