The journal began as a monthly publication in July 1991, was published bimonthly from 1994 to 2003, and continues today as a quarterly publication. It's been a year to remember, because we have met and surpassed so many goals. As examples, the Board of Directors hoped that there could be 50 charter members-­in fact, the total was 60. We had dared to dream that we might have 100 members during our first year--the total is 104 with several others already paid for 1992. We have had seven good programs at the monthly meetings, with attendance ranging from 25 to 40. Numerous compliments have been received on this publication, and good progress is being made on The Heritage of Jackson County. We are gratified at the achievements of this first year, and the other officers join me in looking ahead to continued growth and excellence. Operation of the Society is on a calendar year basis, so it is now time to renew aembership. The dues are as follows: $20 individual, $25 family, and a graduated scale for life memberships (see inside back cover). A pre-addressed envelope is included in this newsletter, and we encourage you to send in your 1992 dues now. If you know others who would be interested in joining the Society, please encourage them to do so. There is some exciting news for this month's message: a meeting place has been aade available. The vestry of St. John's Episcopal Church has approved our Society's meeting in their undercroft (basement), and there will not be a rental charge. We will have some storage space and will not have the restrictions of having to be finished at a certain time. St. John's is located on Jackson Street behind the post office in Sylva. Our thanks to Leah Sutton Heinz, who made the arrangements for the Society. Let me remind you of the deadline for The Heritage of Jackson County. Material must be received by January 15 in order to be included. We still need book orders and memorial/tribute pages. Please contact any member of the Book Committee for help in any way. As our first year comes to a close, let me thank you again for the opportunity to serve as your charter president. Meeting so many of you, letters from many more of you, and the wonderful cooperation and assistance I have received has made this a beautiful year, and I thank each of you. As I close this message, may I wish for each of you and your families a joyous holiday season and a new year that is filled with good happenings. May we all solve a genealogical puzzle that has eluded us, may we locate that long-lost relative in an old census record (his name spelled wrong, of course), and, best of all, may we find a picture never before seen of great­grandpa! Merry Christmas! Ruth Shuler Calendar The regular Society meeting will be held on Thursday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m. Program details are not yet final; watch for more information the week prior to the meeting. The February meeting will be held on Thursday, ~abruary 13, with J. D. McRorie speaking on early Jackson County. Mark your calendar now. Beginning on January 6 and continuing for eight Monday nights, Jane Nardy will be conducting a class on genealogy at Southwestern Community College. The class will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 and cost is $30. Here is an excellent opportunity to learn more about research methods and how to conduct your research by telephone. Pre-registration is necessary; call 586-4091, Continuing Education; the fee can be paid at the first class meeting. Jane is one of our Society members and is a certified genealogical researcher; for those who attended the November meeting, she told us how to deal with famous and infamous ancestors.
