July 17th MEIG'S CREEK AND MEIG'S MOUNTAIN Altho this trip along the top of Timber Ridge and vicinity has been made before, a very beautiful part is yet to be explored. That is the climb up Meig's Creek. The creek empties into Little River at a point 2 or 3 miles below Line Springs. This shortens the hike considerably from last year's, but it will be much harder travelling, for no trail has been found which leads up the Creek. There is a beautiful waterfall where the Creek empties into Little River. This creek meets the old trail at a point just below Buckhorn Gap. As we hike further up the creek we come to a remarkable stand of virgin timber. We will find some massive hemlocks with very little under growth, except at the creek's bank. There is plenty of rhododendron and laurel, some of which will be in bloom at this time. From the head of the creek we travel over familiar ground. Meig's Mountain is in plain view at Low Gap where we will take the road to Line Springs. The distance covered from where the cars are left to Line Springs is about 6 miles. The cars will be left at Line Springs and drivers will be sent back to the falls where Meigs Creek empties into Little River. Leave Dixie System at 7 A. M. Bring food for one meal and canteen. Leaders: W. C. McCAMMON, JR. (2-1721) DAWSON KING (2-0271) // "In the wealth of the wood since the world began The trees have offered their gifts to man." 40

In 1926, the Smoky Mountains Hiking Club began to print an annual handbook that outlined scheduled hikes for each month of the year, including winter. This 1932 handbook was collected by George Masa (1881-1933), a photographer active in the Appalachian Trail Club and in the movement to establish the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. The Smoky Mountains Hiking Club was formed after a group of outdoor enthusiasts hiked up to Mount LeConte in October 1924. Enjoying the spectacular views, the group returned to establish a formal hiking club to sponsor regularly-scheduled hikes into the Great Smoky Mountains.
