  • PAGE 6/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/OCTOBER 12, 1978 A candid interview with Katherine Robinson She's more than the chancellor's wife bv J.M.TRINKS Staff "Writer When sin- attended Western Carolina Teacher's C'ollct;r iii Cullowhee in 1939-40 she never dreamed she would someday be the wife of that institution's chancellor. But in 1974 she found herself in that position. In an interview in the chancellor's home last month. Katherine Palmer Robinson talked candidly about her past. She was born and reared in Haywood County and attended Waynesville High School. Brevard College and WCTC. Her twin sister, Mrs. Ben Price, still lives in Waynesville. They attended school here together as business majors. Mrs. Robinson minored in English and Mrs. Price in math. "We were identical twins; no one could tell ihe difference between us," Mrs. Robinson said. She said she liked "real well" then chancellor Hiram T. Hunter, for whom the present library is named. "There was only one women's residence hall back then. 1 lived in Moore; you had to live there unless you were a day student. And all classes were held in Joyner. "One had to study pretty hard back then. But on weekends, instead of going home, there was a lot of entertainment, dances and so forth. And 1 was a member of some clubs; I remember especially the Business Club." She said she could remember Professor Robert Madison, the founder of the university. "He was still wandering around on campus. He was an old gentleman then, but he still knew everyone on campus. "Once I asked him to sign my yearbook. He did, then continued to draw a little intricate design and color each section. He must have spent an hour and a half doing it, but I hated to say ' hurry up, I need to get to class.' So I missed my class waiting for him to finish." At the end of her junior year here. Mrs. Robinson joined the department of Agriculture in Raleigh as head bookkeeper. She reminiscenced over 35 years ago when she first met Harold Frank Robinson in Raleigh in 1940 as he was preparing to leave to work toward a PhD at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He came back to Raleigh in the summer of 1941 and they saw each other again. "Pearl Harbor was bombed in December 1941 and in January (1942) he entered midshipman's training in the navy. In Februarv 1944 he returned to Raleigh and we were married in the Edenton Street Methodist Church." After their marriage they lived in Miami for two years where he was a navigation instructor at the navy's submarine chaser training school until the war ended. In 1945 they moved back to Raleigh and she worked five more years in the agriculture department. •Turn to Page 10, Please Oct. 13 th. Fri.
