  • not thick, and there are frequent vantage-points from which the open country to the right and to the left and the superb high points on the State line may be seen. Chilhowee possesses an unusual variety of trees; oaks, hickories, walnuts, beeches, wild cherries, evergreens, and many others. Trailing arbutus should be seen at this season. The mountain has been fired over many times, but is gallantly hiding the black scars that are the marks of vandalism or carelessness. Near the end of the ridge the trail goes sharply down to what is locally called Look-Rock, just above the Loop Highway thru Walland and overlooking the Little River. Across the river the mountain starts high again, Chilhowee proper, and extends towards Deal's Gap. Leave Dixie System at 7 o'clock, taking food for one meal and a canteen. Hiking distance about 12 miles. Altitude about 3 500 feet. The trail, though indistinct, is not difficult. Further details of the hike will be worked out by the leaders. Leaders: HENRY DUNCAN (2-8851) ARGUS TRESIDDER (2-2655)
