Leaders: EUGENE GOOCH (5-2507) H. C. AM1CK (2-8664) // June 18th - 19th MT. LeCONTE VIA RAINBOW FALLS AND RETURN DOWN ROARING FORK CREEK Before 1928 very little was known about Roaring Fork Creek. Previously only a few hikers had made this journey. In 1928 our Club organized and conducted the first trip down this beautiful stream. Since that time the trip has appeared annually in our program, which indicates what a wonderful trip it is. In addition, we find that in recalling the descriptions appearing in the handbooks of 1928, 1929, and 1931 that no more can be said about the attractiveness of this hike. Therefore, emphasis will be placed on what is considered most important. That is a difficult task because of the many natural wonders to be seen on this hike. The hike proper will start from the Cherokee orchard where the cars will be parked. The trail is the most popular one used for ascent of Mt LeConte. No one should worry about losing the trail, in the daytime, as it is plain and well worn. About half way UP the trail a huge ledge of rock projects from the mountain and over this ledge flows a stream of water which falls through space for 83 feet. When the sun strikes this stream at a certain angle rainbows may be seen, thus the name of Rainbow Falls is properly applied. Above the falls the trail becomes slightly steeper and rocks more plentiful. Nearly a half mile from the top the trail swings to the left and you have passed the last water" until you reach the cabins. Just 4.1 miles from the cars you will arrive at the camp on Mt. Le Gonte. A welcome sight this will be for it means food, water, and rest. If you should reach the cabins before 33
