  • FISHING The many picturesque streams of the Great Smokies form one of the outstanding attractions of the national park. The park has six hundred miles of ideal trout water. There are no finer streams in Eastern America. Realizing good fishing makes more friends for a national park than any other one thing, the Park Service has adopted restocking and protection policies which look to the creation of a trout-fishing paradise. Trout are to be kept in rearing pools until they tire five or six inches in length before liberation in the park streams and a daily numl>er and size limit will be vigorously enforced. In the past, waters easily accessible have been practically fished out. Remote waters, that is, waters that tire reached only by hiking eight or ten miles, abound in trout. These waters have been fished but little. The upper three or four miles of all streams contain brook trout. Below this the rainbow trout is found. For details concerning fishing rules see chapter on RULES AND REGULATIONS. The following trout fishing regulations are in force in the park during the 1933 season: Open season in Tennessee, March 2 to November 30; open season in North Carolina, April K, to August 31; limit, 20 fish per person per day; sue limit, brook trout, six inches in length; rainbow trout, seven inches in length. Smaller trout must be returned to the waters. Fishing is ]>ermitted only with rod held in hand. Set poles are prohibited. Fishing is prohibited in streams closed for the purpose of restocking. All closed streams are plainly indicated by signs. 'These regulations have been promulgated in order to assure better fishing. Rangers and patrolmen have been instructed to vigorously enforce them. Park streams have been amply stocked with'small trout and if the fishing public cooperates good fishing will be assured in the park in two or three years. The following streams in North Carolina are dosed to 63
