  • ANIMALS IN CHEROKEE MYTHOLOGY Black Bears (yanu)—transformed Cherokees of the tribe of Ani' tsa' guhi. Their townhouse is under kinvahi (Clingman's Dome). Under the mountain is also the magic lake, Atagahi, where wounded bears bathe and are cured. Wolf (wo! ya)— hunter and watch dog of Kanati, who had charge of all the first animals and insects and who is god of hunters. Rabbits (tsi stu)—can talk like people. Their town- bouse is under Tsistuyi (Gregory Bald). Deer (a wi')—are watched over by the mystic Little Deer (A wi' Usdi') which is pure white and the size of a small dog. Hunters who kill deer must propitiate this little ghost-animal or it will avenge the slain animal by sending rheumatism upon the hunter. Redbird (Cardinal) (tatsu' hwa)—transformed daughter of the Sun. Owl (tskili'), and other night birds—they are embodied spirits or disguised witches. Buzzard (suli')~doctor among the birds. Its feathers ward off illness. Golden Eagle (oW hili)- "prctty-feathered eagle." prominent in war ritual. Tufted Titmouse (utsu' gi)— bearer of false tidings.
