  • TOUR NUMBER FIVE: Knoxville's 234.4-mile scenic loop by way of Newport, Hot Springs, Lake Junaluska, Cherokee, Newfound Gap, and Gatlinburg combines rugged mountain scenery with beautiful river valleys. The tour begins at Knoxville and follows No. 35 b> Sevierville to Newport, and then over No. 9 from Newport to the State line. On North Carolina No. 20 from the State line, the route goes to Hot Springs, where it turns right on No 200. The scenic loop then follows No. 209, through rugged mountain country and overlooking Spring Creek Gorge, by way of Trust, Spring Creek Gap, and to the intersection of Nos. 209 and 289, where a side trip may be made to Max Patch Mountain. The loop trip continues on No. 209, after leaving the intersection, by way of Crabtree Post Office to the intersection of Nos. 200 and'lO. Turning right on No. 10, the tour |>a>~e~ by Lake Junaluska and through Waynesville, Balsam Gap. Sylva, andDillsboro to the intersection of Nos. 10 and 112, and follows No. 112 to its intersection with No. 107 at Ocona Luftee bridge. No. 107, passing through Cherokee, goes to the l'ark Boundary, then to Smokemont and to Newfound Gap on the North Carolina-Tennessee State line. Entering Tennessee on No. 71 at the Gap the road winds down the valley of the West Prong of Little Pigeon River, past the intersection of Nos. 71 and 73 to Gatlinburg, Pigeon forge. Sevierville. and Knoxville. Road Conditions: Tennesse No. 35, Knoxville to Sevierville: Hardsurfaced. Sevierville to Newport: Crushed stone. Tennessee No. 0 and North Carolina No. 20, Newport to Hot Springs: Hardsurfaced. No. 209, Hot Springs to Spring Creek Gap: Shale surfaced, passable in any weather. No. 209, Spring Creek Gap to beginning of concrete pavement: Graded dirt road, passable only in dry weather. From here to intersection of Nos. 209 and 10: Hardsurfaced. No. 10 from its intersection with No. 209 to intersection with No. 31
