  • I ataloochee Creek section for sportsmen who wish to angle for the game and wily trout. Beginning at Waynesville, the route follows No. 284 to Dellwood, and then over Jonathan Creek bridge to Cove Creek Post Office and Cove Creek Gap, elevation 4,065 feet. At this Gap one may obtain fine views of the mountains, including Mr. Pisgah, the Balsam Mountains, and the eastern part of the Great Smokies. From Cove Creek Gap the road passes over Cataloochee Creek bridge to Mt. Sterling Gap, Mt. Sterling Post Office, and the North Carolina-Tennessee State line, where it joins Tennesse No. 75. The Tennessee road goes by Cosby Post Office to Newport. Inspiring views of the mountain country are seen at nearly every turn of the road on this trip. As a side trip on this tour the motorist may go to Soco Gap, one of the most historic spots in Western North Carolina. The old road from Dellwood to the Gap is open and passable. A new road, now under construction, from Dellwood to Soco Gap will be one of the main approach routes to the National Park. lsur- Road Conditions: Waynesville to Dellwood: Hardsu.- faced. Dellwood to Cove Creek Post Office: Gravel surface. Love Creek Post Office to Cove Creek Gap and to Mt. Sterling Post Office: Narrow, graded, dirt road, good only in dry weather. Mt. Sterling Post Office to State line: An old wagon road. This is a dirt road, narrow, crooked, and Wry rough. It should not be attempted at all in wet weather. state line to Newport: Well graded and surfaced with 'rushed stone.
