  • September 29,1999 SPORTS iaN 13 TV MA Parental Discretion Advised JOHNSON CITY, Tenn.—It's a good thing the FCC wasn't watching Saturday's WCU/ETSU football game on Fox Sports South. The 38-10 massacre should have been rated TV MA-V for excessive violence, profanity and explicit content of a football nature. Of which, all was administered by the Buccaneers. Where, oh where, can it be?: A WCU alum sent the following classified ad to the Western Carolinian via email. The alum didn't include the $5.00 to run the ad so it gets free billing in O&E this week. "Lost: Football team's desire. If found, please return to Whitmire Stadium before 6:00 pm this Saturday." These Gals are Good: In case you haven't noticed, WCU's women's soccer team is 6-3 and ranked eighth nationally in goals scored. The Pond Scum Club is yet to arrive on the scene but it's coming ... hopefully. A New Breed of Inbreeder: Appalachian State recently debuted its new mascot. It looks better than the 30-year old roughian they had for a mascot before they introduced the new Jed. However, the new mascot is not ana tomically correct for an Inbred Jed—it's not cross-eyed and pigeon-toed. Jeer, Jeer for ol' Notre Dame: Rumors have not been confirmed that Notre Dame is considering joining the Southern Conference so they can be more competitive in football. Copa, Copa Cabana: Rumors about Jeff Gordon's preferences have been confirmed by a recent admission from the pretty wonderboy. Gordon admitted that he owns a Barry Manilow CD. That explains everything. Winston Cup points leader Dale Jarrett confessed to listening to N'Sync and Spice Girls. There's nothing golden in a mental picture of Betty White, Bea Arthur and Estelle Getty in skin-tight black pants and halter tops. Ryder Cupcakes: If the European Ryder Cup team is any indication of the stability of that continent, it's no wonder that most of Europe's governments are in shambles and in need of US aid. The Van deVeldian collapse of the European squad on Sunday earned the team the Ryder Truck championship—the prize given in order to get them out of town as soon as possible. J-E-T-S, Jets! Jets! Jets!: If any of you feel so inclined, you can join a group of crazy New Yorkers in an effort to purchase the New York/Jersey Jets. The group intends to make fans a majority owner of the team, much like the Green Bay Packers. Go to buythejets.com if this gets your tassels turning. And finally: Even though the ETSU/ WCU game was too violent for these eyes, it still beat the hell outta being at Mountain Heritage Day.
