  • March 15,2000 SPORTS WESTERN CAROLINIAN 19 WCU Dance Team Tryouts Scheduled for April 14-16 by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Everyone has seen them...many people envy over them ... want to be one of them? Well on April 14 -16, you can get your chance. The WCU Dance Team is holding it's annual open tryouts for the 2000-20001 dance squad. The Dance Team has become a highly visible and extremely active entertaining and energetic ambassador for Western Carolina University. In addition to performing at men's and women's basketball games in Cullowhee, the Dance Team makes a cameo at the season ending conference tournaments. New next fall will be the incorporation of Catamount football in to the repertoire of performances. The WCU Dance Team also participates in community events in and around Western North Carolina. Included in the tryout process is a two- day workshop on the dates of April 14 from 6pm to 8:30pm in the Ramsey Auxiliary Dance Team Tryouts ■ April 14 6pm-8:30pm Ramsey Auxiliary Gym April 15 10am-12:30pm Breese Gym 2pm-5pm Ramsey Auxiliary Gym April 16 ^10am-12:30pm Ramsey Auxiliary Gym gym and two sessions on April 15 at 10am to 12:30pm in Breese Gym and 2pm to 5pm back in the Ramsey Auxiliary Gym. The purpose of the workshops are to teach the dances and review dance technique to be performed for tryouts. A Pom dance and a jazz/ hiphop dance, both to be performed with a small group, will be taught and later evaluated in the try- out. Comfortable dance clothing is recommended for these beneficial sessions. The culmination of tryout weekend is Sunday, April 16, at 1:30pm in the Ramsey Center Auxiliary Gym. Here, the two dances learned at e workshops will be erformed for evaluation, in addition to the technical moves reviewed. Selection will also be based upon showmanship, appearance, and an interview, and only full-time Western Carolina University students are eligible. Expectations of the WCU Dance Team are very high. The Great one Returns t° wresf Iemaw'3 an4 Vinwie Mac is tack For the past few weeks, the World Wrestling Federation has done very little in the way of storylines. The Rock was busy being screwed by the combined efforts of Stephanie/HHH & Shane/Big Show, Mae Young was being pounded through tables by the Dudley Boys, and Crash Holly remains the Hardcore Champ even while the Mean Street Posse attacks at every inopportune time. However, it all came to a head this week. The Rock took a cue from Mick Foley and demanded a retirement match against the Big Show. If Rock wins, Rock goes to Wrestlemania as the number one contender. If he loses, he retires from wrestling forever. Yeah, like WWF is going to send their biggest cash cow to the slaughterhouse. I was wondering how the coalition would screw Rocky and of course, it came with Shane McMahon as the special guest referee. But who's this pulling into the arena in the stretch limo? Vinnie Mac is back, baby, and he was pissed! HHH tried to confront Vince backstage but Vince clocked the Heavyweight champ and proceeded to also knock the taste out of his own son's mouth in the ring with a steel chair. And to top it off, Vince put on Shane's referee shirt and gave The Rock the win. So finally, the Rock is going to Wrestlemania! And hopefully, Rock will be the next WWF heavyweight champ, because dammit, I wanna see the Stone Cold/Rock Title match when Austin returns to the ring. The main event wasn't the only good match Monday night. The newly reestablished Light Heavyweight Title changed hands from the very talented yet young Essa Rios to the very talented and experienced Dean Malenko. I'm sure WWF has seen the WCW Pay-Per- Views with Dean Malenko defending the Lightweight Title and liked what they saw. Those.were some incredible matches. WCW had one good match and of course it was a lightweight tag match. Three Count (yeah, I know the boy band gimmick is annoying, but these guys have some real talent) and the Three Dragons had an incredible six-man tag match. Each of the six men performed multiple high risk and high flying maneuvers, and even though Three Count pulled out a clutch win, that match was one of the best matches of the last year. Other than that, there wasn't much to Nitro. More Hogan, Flair with a bit of Lugar and ball bats and some Vampiro thrown in for some variety. The Stinger also made a cameo on Nitro. In other news, tickets for WWF "King of the Ring," which is to be held in Boston, went on sale last Saturday. Normally, WWF PPVs sell out in about half an hour, but that wasn't the case with this event. Every seat in the arena was reserved in a record five minutes. WCW is lucky to fill the Ramsey Center, let alone sell out a major arena. On the local level, the PWF is back in full swing with a full array of events. In the first couple of events, a lot of stuff has transpired, including the changing possession of the coveted Pan- Universal Heavyweight belt. Hook, who had held the title since last Thanksgiving, was confronted with a four-corners match with number one contender Kudzu and the newcomers, the Big 01' Boys. Kudzu and Hook teamed up early to get rid of the BOB's from the match, then were going to settle it between themselves. However, a dark and mysterious character donning the sWo letters emerged. Hook and Kudzu fought the mammoth man before both fell victim, giving the title to what President Stress called "the Revolution." The Big Ol' Boys and their high-strung manager J.B. (Jim Beam) are a hot new tag-team that highlights a strong newcomer class to the PWF. Along with the likes of the "Chosen One," Journeyman Ty Kilman and the Wildebeast, it promises to be an exciting spring. In another strange turn of events outside of the sand pit, Prez. Stress met with PWF members Bret "the Hitman" Knight and former champ Hook in Greenville, SC. It was there that apparently the president recruited these PWF Superstars into his fold, supposedly joining the Revolution and the sWo. Be sure to read this column each and every week to stay up on all of the wrestling action of the WWF, PWF, and occasionally, the WCW. Servo Says: "I tried to do the Worm in my backyard yesterday," Jim Ross commenting during the Too Cool tag match Monday Night, "And I damn near hurt myself." I would pay big money to see Jim Ross attempt the worm on national TV.
