  • COUNSELOR'S CORNER ALCOHOLISM : A System Perspective by John Ritchie When we think of alcoholism or the alcoholic we tend to think of individuals who can't control their drinking of alcohol. However, in terms of understanding and changing alcohol abuse, it is more helpful and accurate to view the terms alcoholism and alcoholic as encompassing a system or group of people. It's not just that someone who abuses alcohol affects others, it's that others (family members and intimate friend, or work relationships) are "caught" in the alcoholic system and thereby take on roles and attitudes that maintain a system which in the long run is destructive to themselves and the abusive drinker. Three common, "natural" roles that develop in response to an alcohol abuser are the Enabler, Victim, and Adjuster/Provoker roles. The Enabler, through his/her own anxiety or guilt, wants to be "helpful" by rescuing the abusive drinker from the immediate crises or the high tension situations, created by the drinking. The Enabler enables the alcohol abuser to engage in destructive drinking behaviors without experiencing the full impact of the consequences of that behavior. At home or here at school some examples of enabling behaviors are making excuses or lying to friends or professors to protect the drinker from things said or not done, helping pay for damages, or cleaning up messes due to drinking. The drinker is thereby denied the process of learning by correcting his/her own mistakes and he/she becomes conditioned to believe there will always be a protector to come to the rescue. The Victim takeson responsibilityforgetting the work done that the alcohol abuser neglects. Here at Western, student Victims end up writing papers, taking classnotes, or doing projects from the drinker who doesn't go to class or doesn't do homework because of drinking and hangovers. Victims cover up the non-work of the alcohol abuser and keep up the protection with hope that their "help" this time will be the last time or that it will soon change. The Adjuster/Provoker is generally someone very close to the alcohol abuser, like a family member or intimate relationship. He/she tries to make the relationship better by constantly sacrificing and adjusting to the expectations of the drinker. They believe they have the power or the responsibility to change"fh'e~d?inker and just need to be good enough to do enough to succeed. However, they soon learn that the abusive drinker is never satisfied and actually blames them for provoking his/her drinking—they are held responsible for his/her stress and destructive behavior. Rather than accepting self responsibility for his/her drinking, the alcohol abuser finds it easier to blame those close to him/her who are willing to "accept" that responsibility and role. Examples of the Adjusting and Provoking role are the girlfriend who won't develop any friendships with other guys because of his jealousy yet still gets yelled at for flirting whenever she talks to guys, or the partner who doesn't make any plans for himself so he'll always be available on short notice yet is constantly told he's not giving enough to the relationship, or the partner who won't complain about anything for fear that it'll cause great conflict and further drinking yet gets blamed for most of the problems. It's important to realize that doing what comes naturally doesn't stop abusive drinking because it cannot help. You cannot be responsible for the drinking problem nor can you be responsible for that person's recovery. If you are caught in an alcoholic system, the best way to affect an alcoholic abuser's behavior is to change your natural response to his/her behavior. The natural (rescuing type) response tends to reinforce the behavior you want to change. Take the focus off the drinker and put it on yourself—you have more control over changing your own response. Be responsible to yourself and your own growth and you will thereby provide the best relationship for others too. If you'd like help in dealing with an Alcoholic System, please contact the Counseling Center (Room 20 McKee, 227-7469) for individual counseling or join the group for people wanting to better understand and change alcoholic systems they're involved in at home or at school. ♦ m m m Small group of responsible students seeking to form a Lesbian & Gay Organization at WCU. EDWARDS, D.D.S. 483 EAST MAIN STREET SYLVA NORTH CAROLINA 28779 TELEPHONE 586-8868 RES. 293-5903 Teeth are meant to last a lifetime. If you take care of yours, they will! Dental caries (tooth decay) is the most widespread dental disease among young adults. However, your dentist can help prevent or reduce decay by applying sealants to your teeth. WHY ARE SEALANTS NECESSARY? When the back teeth are developing, depressions and grooves form in the chewing surfaces of the enamel. These irregularities are called pits and fissures. They are impossible to keep clean, because the bristles of a toothbrush cannot reach into them. Therefore, pits and tissues are snug places for plaque and bits of food to hide. By forming a thin covering over the pits and fissures, sealants keep out plaque and food and thus decrease the risk of decay. CAN DECAY START UNDER A FISSURE SEALANT? It is highly unlikely because the bonded seal deprives the bacterial elements of the environment (food, oxygen, etc.) which it needs for the decay forming organisms to flourish. WOULD SEALANTS BE USED ON ALL TEETH' No. There are certainly individuals who are decay free or at least decay resistant These people do not need sealants because a natural immunity seems to exist. In our selection of sealant patients, we take into consideration tooth form and present decay status. As in all other situations in dentistry each patient is treated as an individual with presence or absence of individual problems. wwmt»tmtumt'.wwtttitt'.»»tv.'ttv.i'.i-.t».v.»t»M»t.t»»tr ** COME ALIVE IN '85 THE FRATERNITY OF MEN sr CO Q_ UJ CD * 4* 6* o O O Thurs, Sept. 12, 8-11 p.m. CASINO NIGHT SIG EP STYLE Fri., Sept. 13, 3-7 pm, "RAW OYSTERS & CHICKEN WINGS" HAPPY HOUR Sat,, Sept. 14, 8 p.m, CRUISE TO HAWAII WITH THE LITTLE SISTERS FOR THE 3RD ANNUAL "CHRISTMAS IN HAWAII" PARTY.
