Do you know someone who has? For those who have, did you find yourself asking: "What do I do?" "Who do I tell?" "Should I tell anyone?" "What if I'm pregnant?" "Is there any way I can prevent it?" For the last question, there is a new way, and it's not a "morning after" type of pill. It is PREVEN, an emergency contraceptive kit. PREVEN is designed to prevent pregnancy after sex without a method of birth control, or after a suspected birth control failure. It is a kit that contains a patient information book, a pregnancy test, and the precise dosage of emergency contraceptive pills. But PREVEN is unique in that it is the first emergency contraception "drug" approved by the Food and Drug Administration. (FDA) That's right: every "morning after" pill you've seen in supermarket pharmacies has not been endorsed as preventative pregnancy measures. PREVEN seeks to inform women of their options before and after sex. The kit includes information on how to use PREVEN effectively as a way to prevent pregnancy. Because you are a college student, the manufacturers of PREVEN are making it easy for you to obtain this method of emergency contraception. Jeff Davis, Director Attention All WCU Students... ce Vr, A- TQ I /•n- •s* fo *- Iff C^ Career Day October 27 Ram-,-*.*] Center Concourse — I to 4:50p.m. WCIJcWw Semite* 80 Mr*** *»*•,.(«.«) m 7134 5 WAYS OF MAKING THE MOST OF CAREER DAY (If you are looking for a job!) 1. Dress for Success!! Business attire is a must. 2. Bring copies of your resume. 3. Collect business cards so you can write follow-up letter. 4. Prepare a statement about yourself— major, graduation date, and reasons for interest in the company. 5. Ask questions about the company. of University Health Services for WCU, is knowledgeable on the subject of PREVEN, and has said that it is "A great medication when used appropriately, and your chances of preventing a pregnancy are better than 97 percent when using it." PREVEN is not available on-campus, but can be obtained through prescription, and can cost up to $20 or more, but Davis is quick to point out that "the university is aware of the expense of PREVEN, and would like students to know that we provide emergency contraceptive pills for those who might not be able to afford it. We do provide the same pills. The main idea is for students to be educated and aware of their options." Education about pregnancy and birth control are also in order. For instance, did you know that pregnancy is NOT a spontaneous thing? If it were, then "morning-after" pills and PREVEN would be virtually useless, but since there is a 72-hour period after sex in which you can prevent pregnancy, these methods remain very useful. About 70 percent of women ages 18-24 years old have had sexual intercourse without the aid of contraception, and of that percentage, 85 percent are college students. The key is knowledge. If the public becomes aware of emergency contraception, they have the capability of reducing the number of unintended pregnancies by half. PREVEN is ideal for preventing pregnancy. It works by delaying or preventing ovulation. It can be effective for up to 72 hours. The pregnancy test is included in the kit to determine whether or not you are pregnant, and if you are, you cannot use the drug. This is the same for all birth control pills. If you determine that you are not pregnant, then you move into the next step: taking the pills. The kit contains four light Wue pills that contain progestin and estrogen. If you are not pregnant, you take the first dosage, which is 2 pills, as soon as possible. You should take the second dose 12 hours later. It is also important to know what PREVEN is not. It is not a form of protection against HIV or other sexually transmitted diseases. It should be known that this method does have side effects, similar to those of regular birth control pills. This method of emergency contraception is NOT to be used as a form of birth control, and the pills will not work if the woman is already pregnant. The FDA recognized PREVEN on February 25, 1997 as a "safe" and "effective" way of preventing pregnancy. The FDA has encouraged "manufacturers to make this additional contraceptive option available." PREVEN can be your answer if you are unsure of whether you are pregnant. You should remember that you always have options. >
