September 29,1999 SPORTS ian15 Men's Golf Opens Season Make-up Date Set by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor The Western Carolina University men's golf team opened their Fall 1999 schedule in the Colonel Classic in Richmond, Ky., this weekend. Held at the 6,479 yard, 71 par Arlington Golf Club, this marked the first time WCU had been in tournament action. Head coach Johnny Wike wasn't pleased with the performance of his squad in their first- tournament. "I'm kinda embarassed that we took a team and played the way we did. We're better than that, and the team knows that," added Wike. "We got to see where we were ... and that's a long way away from where we need and want to be," said Wike. "With our talent, 75s are okay. But we can't shoot that, then follow it up with 80- something. It's both confusing and frustrating not knowing why we aren't playing to our poten tial." He added, "I don't know if it's pressure or trying too hard, but we're better than that. We need to just relax and enjoy the game. Golf's a cruel game. The better a player you are, the harder it is." Western Kentucky won the tournament, with a team score of 883. They were followed by Morehead State and host Eastern Kentucky in a tie for second, Ohio University, and Xavier rounding out the top five. The Catamounts placed 18th, 59 shots behind the tourney winner. WCU shot a combined 942 for the weekend. EKU's James Milam took the individual title with a combined, three-round score of 213. Junior Jason Sugg paced the Catamounts with a three-day score of 233. He shot a team low 75 in the first-round, but followed up with an 85 in the second-round before posting a WCU tourney- low 73 on the last day. Sugg finished tied for 57. Comparable to women's team member, Sarah Parris, Sugg had to wear a special shoe on his foot, due to injury. Wike felt that it affected his performance. "He said he couldn't walk and [the shoe] tired him out walking," explained Wike. Mike Bowers tied Sugg's team-low 73 in the second-round. However, a first-day 86 and last day 80 put him back in a tie for 79th with a 239. Bowers moved from a tie at 100 on the first day to his final finishing position. Freshman Bryan Sangid posted an 85th in his first-ever collegiate tournament, only one stroke behind Bowers at 240. Marc Leichtman and Lee Cline were WCU's other entries. Leichtman placed in a tie for 91 st, while Cline tied for 96th. Coach Johnny Wike and the Catamount golfers will travel to Chattanooga, Tennessee, and to the Valleybrook Golf and Country Club on October 4-5, to take part in the Chattanooga Fall Invitational. Paladins for Parents Day by Daniel Hooker Sports Editor After two lackluster performances in College Park, Md., and Johnson City, Tenn., the Catamount football team will look to get back on track at home this Saturday afternoon when the Furman Paladins come to Cullowhee. Furman is coming off of two decisive wins, beating William & Mary 52-6 two weeks ago, and trouncing the Keydets of VMI 58- 0. In both contests, the Paladins offense has put up 500-yards or more. "We've got to bounce back and get ready for a really good Furman team," said head coach Bill Bleil. "They are defensively sound. We have to play good at home to win." Looking at the statistics, Western Carolina is ranked second in the conference in passing offense. This will be tested against Furman, as the Paladin defense is ranked first in defending the pass. The overall series stands at 15-9-2, in favor of the Paladins. Looking strictly at games played in Cullowhee, FU holds a slim advantage of 7-4-1, but the Cats have won two of the last three games played on Waters Field. Some of the keys for the Cata- mounts going into what has turned into a "must win situation," include stopping the Furman offense from having a field day, turn the statistical yardage into points, and to get fired up. It's Parents Weekend in Cullowhee, and the Cats need to come ready to play. Kickoff is set for 6:00 pm in EJ. Whitmire Stadium/Bob Waters Field. The Cats versus Furman PARENTS DAY E.J. Whitmire Stadium Kickoff 6:00 p.m. Tailgate 4:00 p.m. by Don Costello Editor-in-Chief The Southern Conference announced on Tuesday that the football game between The Citadel and WCU will be played on November 20, at 1 pm in Whitmire Stadium. "The conference is pleased that these schools will be able to compete this year in football," SoCon Commissioner Alfred White said. The decision was made following a recommendation by the SoCon's Football Committee to the Executive Committee. In a conference call on Monday, the Executive Committee approved the recommendation. The Football Committee is a three-member body consisting of an athletic director, a faculty representative and a head coach. The Executive Committee is comprised of faculty athletic representatives from all 12-member schools and has the final say in issues such as The Citadel/WCU incident. "The Southern Conference made the decision and we're fine with it," said WCU Athletic Director Larry Travis. "After all the information was gathered, the decision was made as quickly as we could expect," he said. Two weeks ago, The Citadel chose to cancel the game without notifying WCU or the conference of their plans. This abrupt action and a misunderstanding caused a temporary rift between the two schools involved. Travis said the events from the past two week regarding the game will lead the Southern Conference to devise a plan of action to deal with similar incidents in the future. "There's a feeling among conference officials that we need to have policies in place so we know where to go when something like this happens again," said Travis. Conference officials will have their annual meeting in November, and this policy will be discussed then, according to Travis. The weekend of November 20 will be busy in Cullowhee. In addition to the football game, Western Carolina will be hosting the Southern Conference Volleyball Tournament in the Ramsey Center, while a NCAA Youth Education Through Sports Clinic is being conducted on campus. "It's good to know what's going to happen now, so we can make the necessary plans for that weekend," Travis said. ATTENTION AT"ITTT -TT T? AT>XTI7,¥3>C.?
