There were 208 other chapters nationwide who were up for this prestigious award, one of many chapter awards known as Teahan Chapter Awards. These are awarded to chapters whose achievements were outstanding in many diverse areas. "This award is the result of 12 months of hard work by the members of the chapter here at WCU. We deserve to be known as the best in the nation," Mike Crisp, Webmaster for the chapter, said. The award was presented in Boston during the PRSSA national conference. Five students made the trip to Massachusetts to represent the PRSSA chapter at WCU: Michael Crisp, Jamie Flynn, Amy Kuykendall, Joel Linn, and Erin LeFon. The four-day conference, held October 17-20, offered interested students the opportunity to learn more about public relations. Some of the country's leading PR practitioners were there to give students their insight to the world of PR. PRSSA prepares students for their future careers in public relations. All members have opportunities to get hands-on experience that helps them learn skills needed in the years to come. Roberts The English department held an informational luncheon this past Friday, for students interested in the English major and classes. Dr. Mary Adams said about 60 students showed up for the event. "We just wanted to tell people about our major and our department," she said. 'Giving' Campaign Underway -OPI Members of the Western Carolina University community will soon be asked to become "Partners in Giving" through the annual North Carolina State Employees Combined Campaign. The campaign is the only officially sanctioned fund drive conducted on campus, and is designed to give WCU faculty, staff, retirees, and students an opportunity to contribute to hundreds of charitable organizations through a single campaign. "Think of it as one stop-shopping for charitable giving," said Bill Studenc, assistant director of public information, who is coordinating the 1998-99 campaign, assisted by Linda "L.C." Riouff, assistant dean for student development. "Instead of more than 1,200 agencies coming to West ern employees one at a time seeking our help, the campaign provides a more orderly way for these organizations to ask for our assistance. And the payroll deduction option makes it even easier to give." In addition to the numerous local agencies that are part of the SECC — including several that receive funding through the Jackson County United Fund — the campaign also benefits a wide variety of charitable organizations that conduct work across the region, state, nation and world. Completion date for the campaign is Tuesday, November 10. Last year, the university community copntributed over $30,000, and campus campaign organizers are hoping to surpass that amount this year.
