The cadets were put into mock combat situations and given the chance to experience some hands-on leadership training which will benefit their military education at Advanced Camp at Ft. WCU Chancellor Dr. H.F. Robinson declared the date as ROTC Day at WCU following Governor Jim Hunt's proclamation designating March 23-29 as ROTC Week in North Carolina. The events will officially get under way at 1 p.m. when skydivers representing the Screaming Eagles Sport Parachute Club of Ft. Campbell, Ky., parachute onto the intramural field adjacent to WCU's Belk Building with Gov. Hunt's ROTC Week proclamation. On hand to receive the document and make welcoming remarks will be Dr. Robinson and Col. Gregory L. Troutman, commander of ROTC Area V, and Maj. Frank J. Valentine, WCU professor of military science. Following the opening ceremonies, there will be a junior ROTC drill team competition from 1:30 until 5 p.m. Thirteen teams have filed entries in the contest which includes five segments of competition--platoon infantry drill regulation, platoon exhibition, squad infantry drill regulation, squad exhibition, and individual infantry drill regulation armed. First through third places will be awarded in the individual events, and the top three overall units will be selected. The first place unit will receive the Chancellor's Cup, a permanent rotating trophy, during a 5 p.m. awards ceremony. Captain Maxwell B. Carter, WCU assistant professor of military science, is coordinating the drill competition. From 10 a.m. on, there will be a number of military exhibits and demonstrations at the Belk field, including helicopters, mechanized vehicles, wheeled vehicles, weapons, and other equipment. There will be displays from the North Carolina National Guard, Army Reserve, active Army, as well as displays and survival demonstrations by WCU Rangers and Pershing Rifle groups. The grand finale of ROTC Day is the annual military ball which will begin at 7 p.m. in the Grandroom of Hinds University Center. Guest speaker for the formal dinner-dance will be Maj. Gen. Edward A. Partain, deputy commander of the 18th Airborne Corps at Ft. Bragg. The ball concludes at midnight. Gen. Edward A. Partain Gen. Partain, a 1951 graduate of West Point, has a broad military background. Among his overseas assignments, he served for a year as an airborne unit A^maunder With the British Parachute Regiment at ru- t En8land: he served twice in Vietnam, first as Chief, Airborne Operations Section, Studies and Observation Group, Military Assistance Command, and then as commander of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry, 173rd Airborne Brigade. From May 1974 through June 1976, Gen. Partain served as Chief, Army Section, Military Assistance Advisory Group, Iran/Military Mission with the Iranian Army. Junior ROTC teams entered in the drill competition are-.Ashevtlle High School; Reynolds High; Erwin High; Tusco a High; Pisgah High; Freedom High of Morganton; West Forsyth High of Clemmons; Harding High and Gannger High, both of Charlotte; Atkins High, Kennedy High and Hill High, all of Winston- Salem; and Elbert County High of Elberton, Ga. - .
