Western Carolinian January 19,1996 News Western Receives Million Dollar Professorship Award by Tony Taylor Associate Editor WCU celebrated the beginning of the spring semester on Tuesday, January 16 with the unveiling of the Adelaide Worth Daniels distinguished professorship in special education at a ceremony in the Taft Botner Conference Room. The professorship is the first fully funded distinguished professorship in the history of WCU. Chancellor Bardo said," This chair will bring to campus a scholar- teacher who will increase our ability to focus on the needs of the children of Western North Carolina." The scholarship was made possible by a $666,000 donation by Daniels and $334,000 in state funds, which will fully endow the Adelaide Worth Daniels Distinguished Professorship in Special Education to assist teachers of students with special needs. Bardo presented Key with a WCU Chancellors Recognition Award that said, "In appreciation of Adelaide Daniels Key, a noble citizen, true humanitarian, generous benefactor whose concern for the family is making life better for others, and whose concern for children has made possible the Adelaide Worth Daniels Distinguished Professorship in Special Education." Bardo said, "The gift by Adelaide Daniels Key will make a difference to the children of Western North Carolina. Adelaide has made helping others a lifetime commitment. She is a very special woman who truly cares for others. We at Western are proud that her name will be forever a part of this campus." Key explained her motivation for making the contribution. "I want to tell you why this professorship is so important to me. When I was a child, no one had ever heard of Attention Deficit Disorder. So, I was bad, I was stupid, and the world wondered why I couldn't sit still." Key said she hopes the professorship will help create teachers who under stand the challenges of children with special needs. "All through my childhood and adolescence, I was told to sit still. Those of you who know me accept that I am incapable of sitting still. I had trouble with math. "I always figured God gave me big hands and feet so I could count on my fingers and toes better. 'Dick saw' and 'Dick was' looked the same to me. Turning words around and counting on your fingers are the kinds of things that people call you stupid for when you're a child." Key closed by saying it hurts to be called stupid. "It is my hope that this professorship will create teachers who will come away from WCU understanding that different isn't stupid." The owner, Stacey Burgess, said that she was very sad about having to close the New Deli. She stated,"I just didn't have the time to devote to the business." Burgess and her husband own a business in Cherokee and also have a daughter who is two and a half years old. Burgess decided to close down so she could devote more time to her family and to her other business. The New Deli was a spot that featured local bands. Burgess stated that she loved the crowd that visited the New Deli. "Everyone seemed to have a great time, especially when the local bands performed." Rich Garrett, president of the Symposium Society, used the New Deli to sponsor local bands for fundraising events. They were only able to do one fundraising event at the New Deli. Garrett said that it was a huge success and everyone seemed to have a great time when they did it. Garrett would like to thank the New Deli for being so helpful in helping the society raise money. Among the local bands that performed at the New Deli were Minus Us, Oliver Soup, Tarp, The Fismits, Smaller Reptiles, Native Tongue and Sock Monkey. Burgess sends her apologies to the students of WCU for having to close down but, states that it is very important for her to have more time to spend with her family. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
