  • Page 2/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/March 27,1980 The Astern Carolinian Member of the Intercollegiate Press Editorial Staff AlLagano Rob Gathings Mark Wilkins Royce Smith Lee Grant Steve Surles Chip Hammond Bart Bennett E.S. McDaniel Editor-in-Chief Business Manager Managing Editor Associate Editor News Editor Sports Editor Columnist Art Editor Photo Editor Founded 1927 Harassment The Western Carolinian received several complaints resulting from a road block set up by the Highway Patrol Monday afternoon. The road block was described as merely a license check and it resulted in a number of students receiving tickets for not carrying their license as well as other offenses. The questions raised were over a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision dealing with the constitutionality of routine license checks. The Court said that it was unconstitutional for law enforcement officers to stop persons merely to check their license. There had to be a valid reason for the check, such as a suspect on the loose or an escaped convict. According to Dr. Sal Nerboso and William Latimer of the WCU department of Political Science, as a result of the stories they were told by students, they felt the search was Indeed a violation of students'[as well as others who were stopped] constitutional rights. The Highway Patrol told the Western Carolinian that they could pretty much do what ever they wanted when they wanted. There was no need for the license check and it was clearly a nuisance, a hardship, an harassment and a violation of students' rights. I hope those who received tickets will contest them. It's a race again It looked as though Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan had clinched the nominations from their respective parties. Then came New York and Connecticut. Ted Kennedy and George Bush have gained new life and again it looks as though the race may go all the way to the conventions. Ronald Reagan will still be the probable nominee and it is very unlikely Bush will catch him. But Bush and Anderson together may cause Reagan some problems. On the Democrat side Ted Kennedy may be gaining some momentum and unless Carter can do something about the problems in Iran, the economy, and other areas, Kennedy is likely to start gaining some real support. What would happen if Kennedy and Reagan were the nominees? One is on the far left and the other is on the far right. A clear choice for the American voters? Maybe not. The American mood is more toward the middle and this could create a vast dissatisfaction nationwide with the major party choices. Enter one independant candidate John Anderson. Anderson could be the first major third party candidate since George Wallace. But it is still to early to predict. Also, although Reagan is a strong possibility—Kennedy is a longshot. Anderson may also enter the race on a third party ticket should Carter win but I would seem to think he would be less effective. Next week in Kansas and Wisconsin we can see if Kennedy, Anderson and Bush can maintain their momentum. Again, each week offers a continual test for those who trail the leaders. Raffle unfair Dear Editor, I was in my room one evening talking with my friends, and three girls from the Sigma Kappa Spring ^-D^jj ta&SLi coouq par sc %€&&«& vo?*. ^dtau^^st " Pledge class knocked on my door and asked us if we wanted a raffle ticket for 25 cents to a drawing for a fifth of Jack Daniels. A couple of my friends and I bought some of these so-called "raffle" tickets. I called their sorority the next day, which was the day of the drawing, and asked who won the raffle. The winner's name was Shirlyn Chandler (who also happens to be a member of that sorority.) I think if a fraternity or a sorority is going to hold a raffle or any kind of drawing that they shouldn't let anyone in their organization enter. 1 believe this is a kind of student exploitation and it is unfair. Sincerely, Smith Primm Kenny Babiles ROTC week Dear Editor, Governor Hunt has proclaimed March 23-29, 1980, as "ROTC Week in North Carolina," and ROTC Day will be observed at Western Carolina University on Saturday, March 29. Major Valentine and the personnel of the Department of Military Science join me in inviting you to attend this special event. The opening ceremony of the day's activities will begin at the Belk intramural field at 1 p.m., followed by an ROTC Review and the second University Drill Day. There will be a WCU Ranger Survival and Mountaineer Exhibit, and equipment displays will surround the intramural field. The Military Ball, complete with customs, colors, courtesies, and tradition, will conclude the events of the day. A special dinner and an evening of dancing in the Grand Room are planned for your pleasure. I hope that each of you will participate in the activities of ROTC Day. Additional information can be obtained from the Department of Military Science (227-7438). Sincerely, H. F. Robinson Chancellor, WCU Funding unfair Dear Editor, It is time to bring to the attention of the administration, students, and faculty the blatant discrimination towards the women's athletic teams (especially women's tennis). While all of the women's teams at WCU receive fewer scholarship funds than the men's teams, the women's tennis team gets no scholarship funds whatsoever. Everyone knows that each student pays $32 per semester for athletic fees which are used for scholarships and athletic operating costs. We just want to know if the students know exactly how these funds are being distributed, and if they know that the bulk of this money goes to the football players. How can it be fair when there are fifty football scholarships and absolutely no women's tennis scholarships? Every single other athletic team here at WCU receives some sort of athletic scholarship or out-of-state waiver on tuition, however women's tennis receives nothing. This is not fair! We work just as hard as any of the other athletes at this university and we feel we are being treated unfairly. We understand that the athletic budget at WCU is the lowest in the Southern Conference, however, this is no reason to make certain teams suffer while others receive more money and recognition. There are nine members of the women's tennis team, who are paying a total of $576 in athletic fees per year. These fees are going towards the scholarships of other athletes. Theoretically, the more money a team receives the better that team can be. We would like to have the chance to improve our team. We understand that the chancellor makes the final decision as to what teams get scholarships and what teams do not. We are making a public request to the Chancellor to recognize the women's tennis team. As a WCU athletic team we deserve a portion of the scholarship funds and recognition as an important athletic organization of the university. It is time for this blatant discrimination to come to an end. Chancellor Robinson, we hope you will immediately review our situation and see that the women's tennis team is not discriminated against again next year. Sincerely, Karan Martinat Valerie Rosa Members of WCU's Women's Tennis Team VOICE OF THE STUDENTS The Western Carolinian is published every Thursday hroughout the academic year and summer sessions by an j °f Wcstern Carolina University.
