It was the Catamounts' first win in 13 tries over Furman, dating back to the 1992 season. It also marked the first time that Western swept Furman in three games since 1989. "It meant a lot to this team because they haven't beaten Furman in years," said sophomore Shannon Sweeney who led the Cats with 15 kills, two blocks and a .324 attack percentage. Junior Keeya McManus also contributed with 13 kills and an unbelievable .478 attack percentage. First-year head coach Michelle Hansen said that the team was more technically sound than any other match this season. "It feels great [to get the win]. Not only did we win, we played great volleyball," commented Hansen. In the first game, Western took advantage of a shaky Furman squad. The Cats darted out to a 9-0 lead when Furman began to mount a charge that was thwarted by a Shannon Sweeney kill. From there Western reeled off the next five points over a series of volleys to win, 15-2. The Cats faced a suffer challenge in the second game as Furman came alive. Western again jumped out to a large lead, 10-1. From there the Paladins outscored the Cats 11-2 to close within one. Western stood its ground and eventually came out on top, 15-12. In the final game the Paladins were primed for a comeback and took the Cats to the limit. The two teams exchanged side-outs Sophomore Jessi Fick had 38 assists and three aces in the Cats' win against Furman. during the long and grueling match that included eight ties. Western rallied back from being down 14-13 to take the game and the match, 16- 14. The win gave the Catamounts the lead in the Southern Conference race for the time being. It was the third win of the season for Western with seven losses. Furman head coach Cole Tallman, who has more than 400 career victories and a 106- 48 record with the Paladins, said, "If Western will continue to play like I saw tonight, they'll do extremely well." Tallman concluded that the Cats well on their way to regaining the prominence in the Southern Conference that they had in the 1980s. THIS WEEK IN CATAMOUNT ATHLETICS football Cats @ East Tennessee State Sept. 27 - 12:30 p.m - Johnson City (Live on Fox SportsSouth) Tickets available at Ramsey Center Ticket Office through Friday VolleybaU Sept. 26-27 - Cats @ College of Charleston Invitational Cross Country Sept. 27 @ Greensboro Cross Country Invitational Cats Looking for Second Conference Victory by Daniel Hooker & Donald Costello Following the Cats' 45-25 thrashing of the Citadel Bulldogs, WCU immediately started preparation for the upcoming regional showdown with rival East Tennessee State University on Saturday in Johnson City. Western Carolina enters the contest with a 1-1 overall record and a 1-0 Southern Conference tally. The Buccaneers of East Tennessee State, ranked 14th in the Sports Network Division I-AA poll, are coming off a bye week, bringing their 2-1 record onto the Memorial Center surface. Western's Head Coach Bill Bleil commented, "It [Memorial Center] is a hard place to play." In the Bucs' first two victories, against Charleston and future WCU opponent Elon College, ETSU looked impressive. Led by sophomore running back Brandon Walker, they racked up 65 points while only relinquishing 24. Their offensive output was equally impressive, totaling 864 yards of total offense in 145 plays, Walker pacing the way with 216 yards on the ground. "From what I have seen, ETSU is playing the best football of any team in the conference. They are coming off a great season and appear to have reloaded," stated Bleil. In East Tennessee's most recent game, a game that saw James Madison escape with a 32-27 victory in front of 11,900 in Harrisonburg, Va., the Bucs totaled 412 yards of total offense. They were paced by the ETSU's other potent running back, senior Brian Edwards. "They have the best set of running backs in the conference with Walker and Edwards, a good looking young quarterback, a couple of outstanding receivers, and an offensive line that is pushing people all over the field," noted Bleil. Last season the Bucs routed the Cats in easy fashion, 49-10. Western was only able to muster 236 yards and had four turnovers. The Bucs mounted 449 yards in a balanced offensive attack that saw Brandon Walker rush for 104 yards. The game will be televised on Sports South (local cable channel 36) at 12:30 p.m. WCU Rugby Splits Games with ASU The WCU ruggers will look to beat Duke this by Michael Peoples Western Carolina's rugby team played two games at Appalachian State on Saturday, September 20. The WCU ruggers came out slow in the first game against an ASU team that consisted of many experienced alumni players. ASU won the first game 25-0, but Western played with heavy aggression and with some great individual plays. In the second game, WCU came out with redemption on its mind. The WCU ruggers began the game with bone-cracking tackles and great up-field running. Western's offense was led by Dave Hamilton and Edwin Rios adding tries, and Shea Bridges dropped in a two-point conversion and a three-point penalty goal. Western was able to break down the Mountaineer defense and crushed any at- Saturday in Durham. Photo by Seth Sams. tempt at offense. The WCU Rugby Team finished on top 15-7, with a well-rounded offensive and defensive attack. Coach Mark Smith said, "WCU Rugby has never been so competitive, our team has something to prove around the league, and so far we are off to a great start." The Rugby Team will travel to Duke on Saturday, September 27, to take on the Blue Devils. Anyone interested in joining an excellent, winning rugby tradition here at WCU should contact Trainwreck at 293-5740 or Matt Warren at 227-4671. Practice is held at the intramural field beside Reid Gym, Tuesday-Thursday from 4-6 p.m. Western's next home match will be against UNC-W on Saturday, November 8th. Come out and support your local hooker and all their fellow ruggers in a season that should prove to be spectacular.
