  • Page 20/THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN/March 27, 1980 Surles on sports By Steve Surles I *"V A / Saturday's conference baseball doubleheader against Davidson College [at Ronnie G. Childress Held, 1 p.m.) figures to be a good one. Currently, the Das idson Wildcats are 4-0 in the league and in first-place. A couple of wins by the Cats would vault them into the early season championship race. . . If the Cats' Willie Carpenter isn't among the national leaders in RBI's, doubles and total bases, I'll want to see who is ahead of him! Willie currently, In twelve games has 19 ribbies, 28 total bases and nine doubles. That's offense, folks. You have to like the 1980 baseball Cats. The team has a lot of youth, and inexperience, but shows a great deal of talent. Two freshmen on the team, Mel Klnsey and Clen Mattocks both hail from White Oak High in Jacksonville, NC. White Oak was the State Champs in their division last year and were honored bv one publication as the mythical national high school champion. Mel and Clen are just representative ot the Cats' future. After a minor run-in with a West Virginia State scorer in Sunday's 21-5 romp, over a scoring decision, 1 have to say that baseball scoring is much more complex than most people think, and anyone who says it's easy isn't doing it well. But I still believe that the people who see baseball games every day, i.e. writers, should be the scorers at professional games. Believe It or not, that's a big controversy in pro baseball today. Monday's NCAA championship basketball game was not one of the prettiest played, but at least It was close. I goofed, as did many folks, when I picked Purdue over UCLA. It's funny how there's so much "magic" In Golf team wins match those four letters.. . Did you see the AP story on how the University of Kentucky students and fans were rather lukewarm to Louisville appearance in the National Finals? Gee, what do they expect? The chances of a UK fan going bananas over another team, particularly Louisxille, is about as good as a Duke fan, wearing Carolina Blue. Personally, I hope North Carolina State selects a new basketball coach soon, as 1 think they could do more than just a little recruiting before next season. . .and I hope they get someone with an easier name to spell than Duke's Mike Krzyzewski, or now known as "Coach Alphabet." Western Carolina's Soccer Club moved into first- place in the Western Carolina Soccer league over the weekend. Many ot those players play on our soccer team. . .Spring practice for soccer begins next week, too... I'm looking forward to next Thursday's Spring Football Game, 7:30 p.m. at Whitmire Stadium... Final NCAA basketball stats show that the Cats tied for ninth place nationally in free throw shooting, [.753] and was ninth in rebound margin with a 6.7 difference per game. Greg Dennis was 16th nationally In free throw shooting and was 34 nationwide in scoring. And if you don't think being a basketball coach is hard work, not that the Cats' coaches have been to high school basketball tournaments In seven states since the season ended. . .reminds me a lot of the football coaches who have helped trip the 100,000 mile mark on a car that's only a year and a half old. Western Carolina's golf team won one match this past week and then placed well in the Edisto Classic at Orangeburg, SC, this weekend. The Cats defeated Presbyterian Friday 323 to 334 to up its dual record to 4-1. Scott Ferguson and John Budwine led the Cats with a 78 and 85 score, respectively. Monday and Tuesday at the Sixth Annual Edisto Classic at the Hillcrest Country Club in Orangeburg, SC, the Cats placed seventh in a field of 17. The Cats compiled a total team score of 631, after a first round score of 321 scored in bad weather. Individually. Western was led by John Budwine's 155 total for 36 holes. Alan Ferguson's two-ver par 74 on Tuesday was the best overall individual round for the Cats. Coastal Carolina won the tournament in a sudden death playoff against UCS—Spartanburg. Western's next action will be in the Elon College Spring Tournament next Monday and Tuesday at the Alamance Country Club in Burlington. Last Chance To Buy A Subscription To The 1980 Catamount For Only $5.00 Next Fall They Will Be $7.00 Come To 2nd Floor, UC On March 31 Track meet Track and field teams from such schools as Presbyterian College, High Point, Lenoir-Rhyne, Southern Conference foe Furman University, and defending champion Carson-Newman College will come to the Western Carolina University campus this Saturday for the Tenth Annual Catamount Invitational Track and Field Meet. The list ot entries is still incomplete lor me meet as Carson-Newman, from Jefferson City, Tennessee seeks to win the event for the third time in the last four years. The host team, WCU, finished second in last year's meet. Field events are scheduled to start at 1 p.m. with the track events beginning at 2 p.m. on the WCU track below Reid Gymnasium. There is no admission charge. Western has opened its spring track and field schedule in fine fashion placing two second and three third place finishes at the Georgia Relays in Athens, GA, last Saturday. In the first Southern Conference meet at The Citadel on Monday the Cats were very impressive as they whipped the Bulldogs 103-53. The Cats placed first in 13 of 20 events in that meet. Particularly impressive for the Cats this season have been distance runner, Sam Shirley, long and triple jumper Anthony James, both freshmen, and Charles Opdyke in the field events. Cats take Apps The women's softball team bounced back from three losses at the East Carolina Round Robin this past weekend to sweep at doubleheader against Appalachian Stat Monday. The Lady Cats swamped the Lady Apps, 5-3 and 6-1 in a doubleheader played at Boone. It was quite an improvement from the season-opening series at ECU. After beating UNC-Greensboro in the first game 10-7, the Lady Cats lost to UNC-Chapel Hill, 19-6, ECU 10-6 and North Carolina State 8-6. Despite getting some good hitting, the club was victimized by twenty-eight errors combined in the four games. In each lost, the Lady Cats gave up runs in bunches in big innings—the worst of which was an 11-run first inning against the Lady Tar Heels. Tuesday's play against ASU was nearly flawless, as the two wins upped the team's record to 3-3. The Lady Cats entertain Guilford College Wednesday in their home opener and will host the Catamount Classic this weekend. Cat Classic The Catamount Classic, a round robin tournament featuring four of the top women's teams in the state, will begin Friday morning on the women's softball field behind Reid Gymnasium. The tourney, in its innaugur- al year, will highlight games between North Carolina State, Campbell College, East Carolina University, Morehead State of Morehead, Kentucky, and host Western Carolina University. Round robin play has been scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday morning through 6 p.m. Friday with the 2 teams with the best records squaring off in the finals Saturday morning at 9 a.m. Awards presentations have been scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday. The tournament will be played on a 250' portable fence on the field behind Reid gym. The Jackson County Recreation and Parks Department, tournament sponsor, would like to invite all students, faculty, and ft!) li" C°me °Ut and W3tCh outstandine women's Tennis wins The Lady Netters lost two matches this week to drop their overall record to 4-3 in the spring portion of their schedule. The Lady Cats lost to UNC-Greensboro 8-1 Saturday in Greensboro and then lost at UNC-Charlotte bunday afternoon, 11-1. Winners for the Lady Cats were Karan Martinat. 6-3, 6-4 against UNC-Greensboro and Peggy Lambert against UNC-Charlotte, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The Lady Cats will entertain UNC-Charlotte (March 27), Pfeiffer College (March 29) and Guilford (March 30) at the Reid Gym Courts. The match with UNC-Charlotte is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m. The other matches are set for 1 p.m.
