  • The Western Carolinian 8 Thursday, April 2, 1987 Poets Come To Western Carolina By MARTHA McAFEE STAFF WRITER Charles Wright, one of the major poets of today, will Pe on campus Thursday, April 9. He will Pe conducting a question/answer session at 3:30 p.m. in Room 477 of the Music/English Building Also, he will Pe reading the same evening at 8:00 p.m. in the Music/English Auditorium. Charles Wright was Porn in East Tennessee and spent most of his early years there and in Western North Carolina. Being theauthorof seven books of poems, and having won the American Book Award for Poetry in 1983 for Country Music: Selected Early Poems Wright is ready to share his experiences with us here in Cullowhee His most recent Pook is The Other Side of the River He is also a noted Italian translator. Wright has Peen a Fulbright Scholar and has won awards from the American Academy, Institute of Arts and Letters, the Guggenheim Foundation, the National Endowment for the Arts, and other organizations. Charles Wright has taught at the University of California-Irvine, ColumPia University, Princeton University, the University of Iowa, and now a professor at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. Kate Daniels, a poet and novelist, will be in Cullowhee on onday, March 13 until Friday, the 17. She will be speaking with some classes on campus On Thursday, April 16, Ms Daniels will give readings in the Mountain Heritage Auditorium. Kate Daniels' first Pook of poems, The White Wave, won the Agnes Lynch Starreft Prize in 1983 and was published by the University of Pittsburgh Press in 1984 She has also been the editor of The Scandinavian Review and Poetry East, which was a magazine she founded in New York in 1979 She received fellowships from fhe Fine Arts Work Center in Provincetown and from the Bunting Institute of Radcliffe College She is a graduate of the University of Virginia and Columbia University, Ms. Daniels is now an assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
