  • Football takes large slice 1 HI Wt STFRN CAROLINIAN '*e21 Athletic scholarships top $150,000 By Bev Van Hook Contributing Writer Athletic scholarships in excess of SP2.000 were awarded to WCU athletes this sear. Over lilts percent of the funds for these scholarships comes from a $32 athletics fee paid by WCU students each semester, this athletics fee is taken from the "Required Fees" included in tuition costs. The largest receiver of this year's athletic scholarships was the Catamounts football team, with fifty scholarships worth a total of $99,000. According to WCU Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, Robert Waters, additional scholarship funds include: a portion of the campus vending machine receipts, basketball and football concessions and receipts, athletic program sales and Southern Conference TV receipts. Monies to be used for athletic purposes are pooled together and allocated to the individual teams each scar in the form of budgets for scholarships, coaches salaries, team equipment and travel expenses. A faculty committee consisting of twelve professors and assistant protexxorx trom sarious departments and isso xtudentx adsixex Coach Waters and the Chancellor on the allocation ot athletic hinds Dr. Jim Hamilton, Chairperson of the faculty Committee xasx thai although there are positions tor tsso student members on the committee to he filled b> SGA appointees, onls one has been filled. Ihe committee meets eight or nine Uinex a sear and Dr. Hamilton is "concerned that lor the past tsso searx students have not been appointed until a late date in the vear." Hie Student currently serving on the committee ssas appointed well into the school year, misting several committee discissions. There are presently tsselse different athletic teams al WCU to be considered by the faculty committee. Mux vear each team received scholarship funds except the women's tennis team following the football team in acquisition of Scholarship! ssas the men's basketball team ssith fifteen scholarships totalling $27,500. The women's basketball team received $10,500 while the softball team ssas awarded $1500. Both the baseball leam ami the track and cross country leam ssere giscn $10,500. The soccer team ssax assarded $500 in the form of tsso out ot slate tuition ssaiserx i ding 10 Di Hamilton, the golf team ssas allocated $500 but failed to use the tundx. Prior to tins sear neither the men's or women's tennil teams received ans form ot athletic scholarships. Both Conch Waters and Dr. Hamilton stated that the tennis learns did not receise scholarxhipx in the paxt due to the absence Ot permanent coaches tor the teamx. The men's tennis team, under the leadership ot Dr. Joseph Meigs, ssax assarded its first scholarships this year in the amount of $1300. "I am the culprit there," axcerted Dr. Hamilton when asked whs scholarship funds ssere not allocated to the women's tennis team. Although the final decision on the distribution of athletic scholarships lies solely on Chancellor Robinson, Dr. Hamilton admits that as chairperson of the taculls committee he advised against such an allocation. Money was set aside in this year's tentative scholarship budget for the women's tennis team but got no further than the faculty committee. "1 felt we need some continuity in coaching," declared Dr. Hamilton, who weal on to say thai tor the past less years the team's coaches have been graduate axxixlanls who ssere not permanent employees of the university, and ss ho nios cd on after a s ear or Iss o of coaching hi The athletic bodge! for next sear is currently in its tentative State and as ot todax there are still no plans for the allocation of scholarship funds for the women's tennis team.
