  • Union Grove - a feeling more than a place THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN Thursday. Aoril 15- 1971 3 By CHRISTY G. MARTIN News Editor UNION GROVE, N.C— Well, it's not a place reaUy. I mean, it's a big field and there are aU sorts of different kinds of people here, but this isnt exactly my idea of a city or a town or anything usually found on an N, C. roadmap. Union Grove (The Fiddler's Convention) is just a sort of happening inside of you. And at times like this one, noamount of mind tracing can quite describe the essence of what it really is. Unless it's the music. We heard Union Grove before we saw it. I guess we walked about a quarter of a mile just sort of listening. I looked around once and everyone was half-way smiling. Maybe it was some - thing in the air. Like the music. It's happy, I've been here all day and ha vent heard a sad song yet I havent seen many sad people either. They just stand around the fiddlers in little clusters. Some of them are clogging, most of them are tapping their feet. An elderly man just passed by me with a chicken leg in one hand and a bottle in the other. That reminds me of lunch for some reason. We ate potted meat sandwiches and dried apricots. Come to think of it—that's what we had for supper, too. We came from the tent a little while ago. I heard someone say there were between thirty and Blood without consent Students 18 years of age or older no longer need to obtain parental consent to donate blood, according to the American National Red Cross. A law passed by the current session of the North Carolina General Assembly provides that "any individual who is eighteen years of age or more may give or otherwise donate his blood to any individual, hos- Constitution controversy Student Government has not yet approved the new constitution proposed by its Rules Committee. Constant changes are being made in an article-by-article consideration of the constitution. Much controversy concerns review, comment and/or approval of statutes and the constitution itself by the Student Development Office. AU mention of such review and comment has been deleted from articles already approved by the Senate. SGA hopes to settle the question in constitutional by-laws or a catch-all amendment entered into the constitution later. pital, blood bank or blood collection center without the consent of the parent or parents or guardian of such individual." The AshevUle Regional Blood Center of the Red Cross said passage of the state law means that many hundreds more students at colleges and universities now may donate blood without providing proof of parental consent, Regular visits to the Western Carolina University campus by a bloodmobUe unit from Asheville each year result in the donation of hund- dreds of pints of blood to the Red Cross by WCU students and faculty members. CONTACT WANTS TO WORK: Betty Johnson wUl do house work. Call 293-5776, forty thousand people here today. I'm ready to believe every one of them was packed in that tent tonight listening to the final competition. There is a crowd here. And Cullowhee is amply represented. I've never seen so many different types of people standing beside one another. Like a bunch of farmers with suspenders and hounds rubbing elbows with a motorcycle gang donned in "Tasmanian DevU" jackets and riding Harley Davidsons. And things like a grandmother with her grandchildren camping next to a hippie commune. We took a walk tonight to look for firewood with a borrowed ax and a flashlight, Over a fence and through the woods we discovered another type of feeling. It was a quiet kind of thing in the middle of a knee high straw field. There was a bluish glow on everything from the moonlight and walking back to camp just now, I imagined myself in the 1800's heading barefooted down a country lane to the Saturday night square dance in town. And we could stUl hear the fiddlers from almost a mile away. Somebody has taken the log bridge over the creek for firewood. I don't really care. It's past midnight and those fiddlers are still going strong. I know it's going to be cold tonight and all that's left for breakfast is a few stale graham crackers. And I still don't really care. I've just got this feeling that there wUl always be places like this one that aren't really places at aU, but just the kind of happenings that somehow put the sounds of happy inside of and aU around you. center pharmacy for your prescription needs and notions. fjedtuAUs yeerru ^ CHOICF ^KgsALN) - UNION GROVE has a certain air about it It is a feeling more than a place.
