Page 4 High Point Catcher Takes Batting Lead THE WESTERN CAROLINIAN ' J_»l .- Tuesday, April 8,1969 Catcher Eton Hickey of High Point has taken toe early lead In toe Carolinas Conference batting race. Hickey, a sophomore, has 12 hits in 27 at bats for a .444 mark. Stewart Anthony of Pfeiffer, who alternates in right feild and on toe mound. Is second with an average of .412. Grig- Golf Team Loses One, Wins Three After losing to Erskine College 16-2 and topping Newberry by toe same score, Western Carolina's golf team won two matches last week. First they downed West Georgia 322-313 (low score wins). The medalist for toe match was John Lindsey of Western with a score of 75. West Georgia's low man was Lee Griffith with a score of 77. Other scorers for Western were Bruce Stewart, 78; Rick Woolen, 79; and Tony Chapin, 81. Tuesday Western beat Mars Hill College, by a much slimmer score of 389-386. Western had the medalist, Tony Chapin, who shot a 72. Mars Hill boasted two 75~ scores, shot by Dan Hedgepeto and Tom Tatoam. Western's next match is at Mars Hill on April 9. gy Porter, also of Pfeiffer, Is third-with .400. Anthony is also among the leading pitchers. He has two victories, and has allowed only four earned runs in 18 Innings. David Lewis of Atlantic Christian has an 0-1 record, but his earned run average Is 0.00. In other spring sports, Richard Swanker of Atlantic Christian broke toe school pole vault record of 13 feet, 6 Inches by three Inches. Eric Noren accounted for 15 1/2 points for High Point in a meet against Atlantic Christian. N^ren won both to pie jump and toe 440-yarddasti, was second In toe 220 and was on toe winning 440 and mile relay teams. Dennis Bowly, Bill Carter and Harry Melrose also were double winners for High Point in toe meet with ACC. Atlantic Christian's tennis team won toe Campbell Invitational at Buies Creek with 63 points. Campbell was second with 61 points, and High Point fourth with 32 in toe six team event, High Point's tennis team won only six of 27 Individual matches in toe team's first three dual matches and then shutout Greensboro College; 9-0. The Cats scored first in all 17 events and second In 11 of them. UNC-C placed second in four events and third In three. Two new school records were set and five were tied. Roger Jones set a 120-yard high hurdle time with 15.4 seconds. Terry Helms set a three-mile run time, again, of 15 minutes, 18.3 seconds. Jones tied toe long jump re= cord for WCU with a jump of 22 feet. Tommy Jordon tied the school's high jump record with a 6-foot, 3-inch jump, and the pole vault record with a thirteen foot jump. Clarke Hawthorne iied his own 100-yard dash with a 10.1 second sprint and Tom Gibbons tied toe 880-yard em with a 2:00.1 time. Jones vvas the hero of toe day, winning three individual W.N. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University’s student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
