Voice of the Students VOL. XLI NO. 12 THURSDAY, OCTOBER 9, 1975 WESTERN CAROLINA UNIVERSITY CULLOWHEE, NORTH CAROLINA Future alternatives studied in course The history of the future? Paradoxical, in name yes, probable, hardly, but existent never the less. No, there is not a cosmic guru mumbling incantations over some arcane crystal ball, but rather mortal educators attempting to look at some possible alternatives for man in the future. "The Future" is a course being taught as a special topic in the WCU history department this quarter, The course, which is co-taught by history professor Dr. Curtis Wood and Biology professor Dr. Allen Moore, tends to ask the question, what will man do instead of predicting what man will do," Though many people throughout history have been accurate in predicting specific events, general human movements and adaptations for the future are hard to pinpoint, according to Dr. Wood, the course is designed to expose and discuss possible future alternatives in the areas of ecology, politics, economics, sociology and technology. The course* will also attempt to touch on possible changes in human nature and values, as weli as some coverage of the topics of philosophy and metaphysics. The course itself is presented in seminar fashion with guest lecturers speaking on possible futures in their particular areas, supplementing the lectures of Wood and Moore. Guest lecturers include WCU professors Dr. Charles Stevens and Mr, Tom O'Toole. Along with Dr. Stevens' lecture on possible political futures, visiting lecturer, Dr. Marvin Soroos, Professor of politics at NC State will speak Oct, 29 concerning alternative political movements and systems. Mr. O'Toole will speak on the possible roles and paths of action open to the third world states, Running concurrently in theme, though not TURN TO PAGE 2 Hall seats filed for senate Twenty-two students filed for the seventeen residence hall seats to the WCU student senate by the deadline Wednesday, The one seat available in Benton Hall is being contested between Dan March, Mike Lo- vell, and Frank Carleton, The two positions available in Harrill are split between two candidates, Frank Kelly and Rex Hobson. John Dollard, Norm Schoer, Gens Vastgaard, and (ierald Barns are vying for the two seats from Leather- wood. In Reynolds, Charlie Bower and John "A" Barker have filed for one seat. The four seats available in Scott are being fought for by Roselia Elvarado, Melody Brand, Margeret Hearn, Lee Hardin, Mary Brand, and Cindy Lowe. Betsy Eve, Kim Daniels, Carolyn Turnbough, and Cindy Helms are candidates for the one Buchanan seat, Dixie Walker seems assured of one of the two available positions in Helder. Albright's two available seats, Madison's single seat, and Walker's two seats are without candidates. Newspaper needs permission to sue (CPS)—A student publishing organization at the University of Texas has learned that it must obtain the permission of the University's Board of Regents before it can sue the Board of Regents. Attorney General John Hill ruled that Texas Student Publications (TSP), which publishes the university's newspaper, the Daily Texan, was "no longer a legal entity," due to a trust agreement between the regents and the TSP administrative board, and cannot hire an attorney without the approval of the regents and the university president. The decision followed a 1974 action, in which the Board of Regents dropped mandatory funding for the Daily Texan, and the TSP tried to hire a lawyer to investigate whether the step constituted a trust violation.

The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
