Whitmire Stadium in Cullowhee. The West Virginia Tech Golden Bears come to town for Western's final tune-up before Southern Conference play starts September 21 st against the Citadel in Charleston. The Golden Bears are led by fourth year Head Coach Mike Springston. Springston obtained an 11-23 record in those four seasons. As a result, West Virginia Tech finished third in the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, but opened the season with a 63-6 loss to Nicholls State. The Catamounts beat the Liberty University Flames in their season opener on August 31 with a strong defensive performance. Junior Rod Dunlap was named Southern Conference defensive player of the week after an interception and fumble recovery in that game. This could be one of the most exciting games of the season as Western has a good chance to blow out the Golden Bears. The Bears lost their top four offense performers last season and have yet to show any signs of offense. Game time is set for 6:00 P. M. , which gives students plenty of time for tailgating. WCU (4-3) went 2-1 in the tournament as well as Tennessee (6-1). However, since the Cats defeated UT in head-to-head competition, they were named the champions. In Western's first match of the day against Villanova, neither team seemed to get into an offensive flow, but the Wildcats started pulling away and eventually swept WCU, 3-0. There were many errors on both sides as the two teams failed to take advantage of several scoring opportunities. Shari Harder proved to be the glue that held the Catamounts together, leading them in digs (14) and assists (16). ts WCnewsmagazine Is looking for sports writers and photograghers, we will even do some of the training.
