Last year, it was newcomer UNC Greensboro. This year, it is the Wofford Terriers, who are making their first tournament showing. WCU lost their only game against the south's third seed, 90-85, in Cullowhee on February 8. The Terriers super-sophomore, Ian Chadwick scored 36-points in the win. Western countered by putting five players in double-figures in a game that could have gone either way. Dondrell Whitmore's 24, Casey Rogers' (who is expected to be named the Southern Conference Freshman-of-the- Year on Thursday) 17, and two scoring 12 wasn't enough to over come the outside shooting of Wofford. "We're looking forward to facing Wofford in the first round," stated Hopkins. "Casey [Rogers] will not have to wear the protective mask in the tournament and that will, hopefully, be a boost for us." He added that they aren't looking at any opponents past Wofford—they are going to take it one game at a time. Looking at the tournament as a whole, the nationally-ranked, College of Charleston Cougars are heavily favored. They come in riding a game winning streak. They finished undefeated (16-0) in the Southern Conference* becoming only the second team since 1974-75 to accomplish that feat. Other favorites include the number one seed in the North, Appalachian State, and Davidson College. However, Furman, East Tennessee State, and Wofford, who have been streaky as of late. The tournament kicks off Thursday at noon from the Greensboro Coliseum. Tickets are still available through the WCU ticket office at 227-7338. Daniel Hooker Sports Editor Lady Cats in Cat Fight with Cougars In a year that has seen many WCU women's basketball records fall, first-year Head Coach Jill Dunn is looking to add to the list. In the Lady Cats' 15 year history in the Southern Conference, they have only managed three wins in the post-season tournament—none by a first-year coach. All that could change this year. The Lady Cats, the number seven seed, will face the College of Charleston Cougars, the number 10 seed, in the last game on Thursday. This season, WCU swept the Cougars in their two regular season meetings. Laura Echols, who earned Southern Conference Player-of-the-Week honors this week, led the team with 20 points in the 76-70 win in Cullowhee in late January. April Fleck paced the Lady Cats with 18 points in the 71-61, 10 point win for WCU down in Charleston. The key for WCU is to stop College of Charleston's lethal Missy Peterson. In the game in Cullowhee, she tattooed the Lady Cats for 27 points, which kept the game close and actually gave C of C a lead. The team that won it all last year, UNC Greensboro, is once again the number one seed and is favored to win it all again this year. The tournament kicks off Thursday af: ternoon, with the first two rounds being played at Fleming Gym, on the campus of UNC Greensboro. The semifinals and finals will be played on the main court in the Greensboro Coliseum. Tickets are available through the WCU ticket office, at 227-7338. Southern Conference previews by Daniel Hooker, Sports Editor 'Champs' cont. from page 1 The title for the WCU men's squad was their first since joining the Southern Conference back in 1976. Western beat out Appalachian State by 20 points, followed by VMI, Chattanooga, and ETSU, rounding out the top five. Helping the team to the yictory included individual event wins by Johnie Morrison in the 55m dash, Phillip Johnson in the 351b weight throw and shot put, and Tim Thomas in the pole vault. Johnson's performance in the weight throw has given him a chance to make the automatic qualifier into the NCAA Championships this weekend at Indiana University. Western's women's squad led the entire tournament enroute to their third indoor title in the last four years. Just as in the men's competition, Appalachian State was second, followed by Chattanooga, East Tennessee State, and Furman in the top five. Valerie Metz won the 20-lb. weight throw and Shawnta Person won the 400- M dash to help carry WCU to the title. Valarie Jalajas, just like Phillip Johnson, hit the NCAA Provisional qualifying mark and will have a chance to qualify for the NCAA's this weekend. She set a Southern Conference record in the pole vault in winning that event and qualifying. Freshmen Jeremy Carter and Virginia LaCombe both earned the Southern Conference Freshman-of-the-Year honors. Carter scored points for the WCU men in five events, including the 55m hurdles, 55m dash, and long jump. LaCombe scored points in six events for the ladies' team in the high jump, pole vault, triple jump, and the 55m hurdles. "Our two Freshmen-of-the-Year are both talented athletes. They did a lot for the team in that they were in five or six events and placed in them," said Williamson. In addition to those two awards, Williamson earned the Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Coach-of-the- Year on both sides. It was the sixth time in his career at Western that he has earned that honor as the women's coach, and the second time on the men's side. "Those awards don't happen unless your team performs," commented Williamson. "It'd be wrong to say that the award is just mine. It goes to our team and to our assistant coaches. It is a team effort." « lose Weight Fast" Closely guarded secrets available to You! NEW - SAFE - ALL NATURAL Call TODAY for your FREE 3-day sample. (828) 524-2683 OR (800) 580-2683 PIN #35
