  • March 23, 1995 Western Carolinian Features Mood Altering Drugs at the Forefront of Counseling Services Jonathen Jones Staff Reporter Through the on-campus Counseling and Psychological Services department, located in the bottom floor of the Scott building, students have counseling and psychological services available to them. According to Dr. Chris Gunn, the top four problems students have are "relationship breakups, depression caused by school, anxiety related to school, and individual phobias." Students can also be referred to the Counseling and Psychological Services by a professor, an RA, a parent, or the Housing office. Gunn also added, "The student can forced to go by anyone. But if housing sends them for, example, an alcohol problem, they have to go or could lose their on-campus housing. But Housing will not be informed of what happens during their sessions, only the fact that they attended. Housing would only be told the dates and times the students reported Counseling and Psychological Services." Gunn pointed out "that at any one point in a person's life, 10-25% of the women and 5-12% of the men in the United States will experience some form of clinical depression. This means some students will experience it at some point during their college careers." Counseling and Psychological Services offers counseling and psychological evaluation services, but if the need for medication is determined, students are referred to Smoky Mountain Center For Mental Health. Gunn also added, "In the '93-'94 academic year we referred 50- 70% of students we were counseling to the center for mental health for medical evaluations. And of those numbers, roughly 80% that were recommended began medication." The Smoky Mountain Center for Mental Health is located in the Killian building on the WCU campus. This center provides services not only to WCU, but also the local population of Jackson County. Students do not have to go through the department of Counseling and Psychological Services. They can make an appointment and go straight to the Smoky Mountain Center for Mental Health. But according to Mary Lossiah, a certified substance abuse counselor who Continued on page 10 • IWB VOLK "In the '93-'94 academic year we referred 50-70% of students we were counseling, to the Center for Mental Health for medical evaluations.
