  • Western Carolinian Marcn 2d, 1995 News WCU Establishes First Doctoral Program Jonathan Jones StaffReporter The UNC Board of Governors recently agreed to the creation of a Doctoral program in Educational Leadership. This establishes the first Doctoral program in WCU history. According to Gurney Chambers, Dean of the College of Education and Psychology, the program will "focus on improving leadership for the public schools and rural areas." Requirements for admission to the program are three years of successful teaching. Program requirements for the Ed.D. are a dissertation, course work in the areas of research, leadership, and other supporting areas, and an average of 63 semester hours in a Master's program in Education. The initial process of bringing the Ed.D. program to WCU began in the Spring of 1989. The UNC General Administration and Graduate Council had approved the program's proposal, but the decision was delayed while they reviewed the UNC system's twelve other programs. In September of 1994, they decided to continue the Master's programs at WCU and at six other institutions in the UNC system. "Five new faculty positions will be created in the department to provide sufficient personnel to carry out the program," Chambers said. "Resources in Hunter Library will be enhanced to support the student's studies in rural education and other related areas." For more information about the new Ed.D. program, call Don Chalker, Head of the Department of Administration and Curriculum and Instruction at 227-7415.
