  • Bardo Becomes WCU's Next Chancellor June 1 John Bardo Colleen Vasconcellos Associate Editor After a ten-month-long search, WCU finally has its new Chancellor. And the winner is...John Bardo. Bardo will leave his position as Provost and Vice-President for Academic Affairs of Bridgewater State College in Massachusetts to take the job in Cullowhee on June 1. Bardo has many innovative ideas for the future of WCU's students and faculty as well as the campus itself. Besides planning to boost private support for the university Bardo hopes to better the supply of high- quality teachers to Western NC. Bardo was chosen from 255 applicants to become one of four finalists in the search. After his visit to WCU in January, he became one of two semi- finalists. The final decision was made by UNC President CD. Spangler on Friday. Bardo replaces Interim Chancellor John Wakeley, who will return to his position as Vice-Chancellor in June. 'Information taken from the Asheville Citizen-Times News In Brief • Rumors were going around that Blake Frizzell drowned in Bear Lake over the weekend. The rumors were false. Women's Studies Program Caught in Controversy Over T-Shirt Sale Jonathan Jones Staff Reporter On February 20, WCU's Women's Studies Program was innocently promoting itself through the sale of T- shirts in celebration of Women's History Month this March. The back of the T-shirts read at the top: "The Top Ten Myths About the College Female." The myths varied from #l-"Our version of current events is the latest gossip;" #4-"Our idea of women's literature is the latest Cosmo;" #6-"We find fraternity parties culturally stimulating;" to #10-"We are in college to receive our MRS. Degree." Many WCU students and faculty found these T-shirts funny. However, many did not, namely some individuals from the Department of Child Development and Family Relations. The main reason for this controversy surrounded myth #5, which read "We all major in Home Ec, Child Care, and Education." Dr. JoAnn Hickey, Director of the Women's Studies Program, explained, "We weren't saying anything negative about those programs, but we were simply showing that women didn't have to fall into the traditional role. "We were simply showing that there are now many options for women," Hickey continued. "We didn't imagine that anything on the shirt would offend, someone. "The faculty in the Communications Department looked at the shirt before it was produced, and didn't think it was terrible," Hickey said. "I was surprised when a faculty member in the Department of Child Development and Family Relations said that it was demeaning, because that's not what we meant. "As soon as we realized we had a problem, we immediately took care of it," Hickey added. "We sent the shirts "Controversy" continued on Page 2 Jason Moore and Eric Whitson come around to score two runs for WCU against UNC-A.
