  • March 23, 1995 Western Carolinian Features Scott gets all environmental and stuff with the Tuckaseigee River Cleanup A Features Commentary by Scott "Scoop " Francis As some of you may have noticed, my column was not included in last week's edition of the Western Carolinian. That's because I didn't write one. Ever since spring break I have had a hard time motivating myself. I'm sure most of you know where I'm coming from. The weather has been way too nice to think about the eight-page paper I have due Tuesday. I want to run around with a water gun shooting people on the UC lawn; I want to play frisbee jnstead of slaving over CIS tutorials jn the computer lab; I want to drive °y Scott beach really slow... repeatedly. It's not much of an excuse, but it's the absolute truth. Nothing would suit me more than spend the rest of the semester pursuing these lazy spring activities. Unfortunately, this is not what is meant to be. I must force myself to move on, the same as all of you. With this in mind, I resumed writing my column with intent to focus on some spring activity; something fun but productive at the same time... the annual Tuckaseigee River Cleanup! Every year Last Minute Productions sponsors a "cleanup" of 22 miles of the Tuckaseigee River from East LaPort to Barker's Creek Bridge just west of Dillsboro. Participants get to float down the river in rafts or canoes and pick up trash. "Pick up trash?" you might say. "That's supposed to be fun?" Well, yes. Not only will you be able to say that you participated in "one of the largest cleanups in WNC," but you will also receive a free Tuckaseigee River Cleanup T-shirt, be able to attend the free cookout following the cleanup, and have a chance to win door prizes. Also, the campus group who is most represented at the cleanup will get a prize of $100 from the University Center. All of this just for helping the environment, something that many of us would gladly do anyway. The cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, April 22. You can sign up early at the University Center or just meet at the UC Saturday at 11 am. The cleanup will be over by 4 pm, so you will still have plenty of time to attend the cookout and then hurry home to... do your homework. In past years the cleanup has been a terrific success. Last year approximately 400 people volunteered. More than fifteen truckloads of garbage, beer cans, discarded car tires, refrigerators, and other junk were picked up. So come together for a good cause that should also be a lot of fun. LMP will provide everything you need: rafts, canoes, life jackets, transportation, etc. All you need to bring is yourself, unless you can round up a few reluctant friends. It's spring! Get out there, keep nature beautiful and have fun! For information call Bill Clarke or Charles Chancellor at 227-7206.
