  • Western Carolinian March 23, 1995 Sports Cats Lose 2 of 3 at Georgia Southern Jason Queen Staff Reporter STATESBORO, GA-Western s baseball team could manage only one win in a three-game set with Georgia Southern in Statesboro over the weekend. GSU improved to 16-5 on the year behind strong pitching and the Catamounts' shaky fielding. Game 1: GSU 9 WCU 2 Georgia Southern's Senior southpaw William Rushing proved why he was a selection on the Pre-Season All- Conference team. He threw eight strong innings, giving up two runs on six hits and striking out eleven. Three Catamount errors and seven walks by Western starter Joe Jack Sellers didn't help matters. The Cats dug a quick hole, falling behind 3-0 after the first inning. But first baseman Alex Tolbert led off the second with his eighth home run of the year. Jason Moore walked, and Tony Right-hander Clark Maxwell struck out 12 in the win over GSU. He was named the SoCon pitcher-of-the-week for his efforts. Photo by OPI Home and Chad Moore hit back-to-back singles one out later to load the bases, but Chris Rowley lined into a double play to end the threat. Western cut the lead to 3-2 in the fourth on an RBI single by Jody Henson, but the Eagles posted six more runs in their half of the seventh to put the game out of reach. Henson was 2 for 4 and was the only Catamount with a multi-hit game. Game 2: WCU 6 GSU 2 Western bounced back in the second game of the Saturday doubleheader, handing GSU it's first home loss to a conference foe in 18 games, 6-2. The Cats opened up the scoring in the top of the third thanks to some timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. Chris Rowley walked, stole second, and scored on consecutive infield singles by Kevin Baldwin and Jody Henson. Baldwin and Henson then executed the old double steal to perfection, and Baldwin scored on J.R Burwell's groundout. In the fourth, Dave McKay drove in Eric Whitson to make it 3-0, and Kevin Wilhoit plated Kevin Baldwin in the fifth to give Western a 4-0 lead. But GSU rallied in the home half of the fifth, scoring two to cut the Cats lead in half. But Western pushed across two insurance runs in the seventh on a two-RBI single by Eric Whitson for the final margin. For the game, Western baserunners swiped seven bases. Catamount starter Clark Maxwell was brilliant, going the distance and staking out 12 to pick up his third win of the year. Game 3: GSU 9 WCU 2 Six walks and three errors led to three unearned runs as Georgia Southern took the rubber game of the series 9- 2. Eagle starter Jeff Keppen, another Pre- Season All-Conference pick, scattered seven hits in 7 1/3 innings, staking out seven along the way. Jody Henson paced the Cats with two hits, and again was Western's only multi-hit performer at the plate. The loss dropped Western to 13-12 on the year, 7-5 in the Southern Conference. GSU kept a tight hold on first place in the Conference standings, improving to 8-1 in conference play. LUNCH(11-2): Mon., Wed., Thurs. & Fri.
