  • This 16-page booklet, “Champion Owns the Trees!” was produced by Champion Coated Paper in Ohio, the parent company of Champion Fibre in North Carolina. The booklet’s focus is the “timber-land” in North Carolina, captured in a step-by-step detailed, photo-essay. Photographs include cutting the trees, stacking and sorting, and building a track to move lumber out of the forest. At the time of this publication, Champion owned 167,000 acres of virgin timber, almost all of it within the boundary of what would become the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. In recognition of growing conservation concerns, the booklet states, “It is really an act of kindness to remove the mature trees,” thus, reducing the hazard posed by fire. The booklet was the first of a series.
