  • :arch 23, 1995 Western Carolinian Editorial Death Penalty Supporter Prosecutes Liberals Dear James Gray, I don't understand why you're making such a big deal over the death penalty, because it's what some of our sodety has chosen to handle crime and overcrowded prisons. You liberals are all the same, you're against the death penalty called abortion and you haven't even given the kid a chance to commit a crime. Unless you call being born a crime so that's why we should stop the birth from happening in the first place right? Another thing: what's with this candlelight vigil BS that you all do when someone is being executed, because it won't make a lick of difference whether the person is fried or not! North Carolina just executed a guy last year who said, ". . good riddance to you all," in his last words to the people around him before being executed. His statement was also d irected to the people of North Carolina and to the people outside the prison who were holding a candlelight vigil in protest of the execution of a guy who had no remorse for what his mme had done to the victim and the family. If our current policy of a crime bill doesn't deter crime, how about the Mersonian Crime Bill: Section 1: Whereas it frequently haPpens that wicked and dissolute men, resigning themselves to the dominion of inordinate passions, commit violations on le »ves, liberties, and property of others - *e secure enjoyment of these having Principally induced men to enter into society - government would be defective lts principal purpose, were it not to restrain such criminal acts by inflicting due punishments on those who perpetrate them .. .If the punishment were only proportioned to the injury, men would feel it their inclination, as well as their duty, to see the laws observed . . .so that men while contemplating to perpetrate a crime would see their punishment ensuing as necessarily as effects follow their causes. Section 4: If... a husband murder his wife, a parent his child, or a child his parent, he shall suffer death, by hanging, and his body delivered to Anatomists to be dissected. Section 5: Whosoever committeth murder by poisoning, shall suffer death by poison. Section 6: Whosoever committeth murder by way of duel, shall suffer death by hanging; and if he were the challenger, his body, after death, shall be gibbeted (that is, displayed in public). He who removeth it from the gibbet shall be guilty of a misdemeanor, and the officer shall see that it be replaced. Section 7: Whosoever shall commit murder in any other way shall suffer by hanging. Section 8: And in all cases of... murder, one half of the lands and goods of the offender shall be forfeited to the next of kin to the person killed, and the other half descend and go to his own representatives. Section 10: Whosoever be guilty of manslaughter, shall, for the first offense, be condemned to hard labour for seven years in the public works; shall forfeit one half of his lands and goods to the next of kin of the person slain; the other half to be sequestered during such term, in the hands and to the use of the commonwealth, allowing a reasonable part of the profits for support of his family. The second offense shall be deemed murder. (For murder, see section 7) Section 13: Whenever sentence of death shall have been pronounced against any person for treason or murder, execution thereof shall be done on the next day but one, after such sentence, unless it be Sunday, and then on the Monday following. Section 14: Whosoever shall be guilty of rape, or sodomy with a man or woman, shall be punished; if a man, by castration, a woman, by boring through the cartilage of her nose a hole of one half inch in diameter at the least. Section 15: Whosoever on purpose shall disfigure another, by cutting out or disabling the tongue, slitting or cutting off a nose, lip, or ear, branding, or otherwise, shall be maimed, or disfigured in like sort, and moreover, shall forfeit one half of his lands and goods to the sufferer. Section 20: Whosoever committeth a robbery, shall be condemned to hard labour four years in the public works, and shall make double reparation to the persons injured. Section 22: Whatsoever act, if committed in the night time, shall constitute the crime of burglary, shall if committed in the day, be deemed house-breaking; and whoever is guilty thereof, shall be condemned to hard labour three years in the public works, and shall make reparation to the persons injured. Section 24: Grand larceny shall be where the goods stolen are of the value of five dollars; and whosoever shall be guilty Lynn Talks Trash About Speedwell Dumpsters AMn!^EEP N°RTH CAROLINA CLEAN SOOnac, '"<"s wiiciiine signs say ^ on 1-40 °ld F°rt and Black Mountain remi ■'. This, however, is not the main reason I am angry. The most appalling thing that I have seen is the lack of respect people have for the area around the dumpster(s). Living in Cullowhee for three years has made me a very environmentally conscious individual. I'd always assumed that these mountains affected everyone the same way. I was wrong. Some of the people who use the Speedwell dumpster(s) obviously have no respect for the mountains. I don't know if the blame should be placed on locals, students, or inbreeds, but someone sure does suck. It is not that hard to toss the trash bag on top of the pile. I know you have to put a little muscle into it sometimes, but if I can do it so can everyone else. I am sick of seeing dirty diapers, broken glass, molding food, and yet-to-be- discovered diseases festering about when I go to throw out my weekly trash. I imagine these complaints won't really help since the people sleazy enough to deface the area that way probably can't read. I have come up with a solution that could kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. We could force those among us who are being punished with Community Service to clean up the mess. Thus, encouraging them not to repeat whatever crime they committed. Most caught delinquents serve out their Community Service hours at the Jackson County Animal Shelter walking puppies. I'm sorry but that kind of slap on the hand you can give me any day. Granted, the shelter needs workers, but not all of them. 1 think they could spare a few for the dumpster-clean-up-cause. If you agree with me, feel free to call the Community Service Department and voice your opinion. On Tuesday I repeatedly called to ask them if this would be a difficult transference process, but to no avail. No one answered the phone or returned my voice mail messages. Do not fret. I won't give up that easily Lynn Jones, Sports Co-Editor thereof, shall be forthwith put in the pillory for one half hour, shall be condemned to hard labour two years in the public works, and shall make reparation to the persons injured. Jefferson proposed this to the Virginia legislature while he was governor in 1779, but it was never passed, probably because the liberals back then thought it was too cruel and there was no mention of midnight basketball, either! The US hardly has a death penalty anyway. In 1993, 20,000 murder arrests were made, and out of these, 18,000 were prosecuted, and only 50 to 60 of the 18,000 were executed. That's hardly anything worth making a fuss about, because it's only a drop in the bucket compared to the 17,940 to 17,950 left in the prisons! A Supporter of the Death Penalty, David Whiteheart Caring is Simple, and Necessary To the Editor: Brian Railsback's letter to Dave Williams in the March 16 issue of the Western Carolinian moved me. His obviously effective use of language is impressive, but what I am responding to is the caring and concern evident in the content. I, too, read Dave Williams' piece, but like most others, I did not take the time to communicate to him or anyone else that I had noticed something potentially alarming. (That I do not know him personally partly explains my not responding but does not excuse it.) Brian's letter communicated to Dave that Dave matters to someone. Numerous other students learned that, also, and some will have managed to apply it to themselves as well. It was coincidental that I read Brian's letter almost immediately after having conversations with two different people on that same topic—the importance of caring and taking the time to show it. A former student dropped by to thank me for my "generosity" in "giving" him a "D." He also wanted me to know how much more he thinks he learned in my course than in his prior Spanish courses. After clearly stating that I do not "give" grades but students earn them, I told him it would be helpful to me if he could pinpoint things in particular about this course that helped him learn more. After only a slight pause, he said, "you cared, you showed it, and you were "Caring" Cont'd on Page 14
