Stay at N.C, State and have a chance to vie for the national basket- tall title next year? Or take a pro contract which will provide instant wealth and guarantee a family's financial security for life? Quid Thompson has a lot of forces pulling him in both directions as he continues to lead State to national hoop pronvnence. According to Fred Schaus, the ex-Laker coach, he is already one of the best 10 ballplayers in the country now- pro or collegiate. Red Auer- baeh, GM for the Boston Celtics, says Thompson may be worth a million dollars over five years (with a deferred compensation plan). That's an average of 8200,00 a year. In the first year David would receive more than a fifth of the million, because his sizeable bonus would -be up front. The package would include monies for David's family, which consists of 13 people headed by father who makes approximately S5,000 annually. If David were to remain in school and become waylaid before turning pro all could be lost (as opposed to if he turned pro before a mishap-in which case he would still collect even though he couldn't play). God forbid. What a waste of athletic ability and aesthetic entertainment for millions of sports fans. What a loss to David Thompson,, It would be hard for David to leave State. Not only would he leave behind a prominent basketball team which would have a chance to challenge for the national title in 1973-74 (the Wolfpack is ineligible for post-season play this season), but the popular Shelby native would temporarily part com* pany from many friends-from both on and off the court. Either way David will be able to finish his degree at State if he wishes. If he turns pro the team he signs with would finish the rest of his education in the off-season as part of Track And Field Warms Up As spring and the outdoor season draws nearer, the Western Carolina University track and field team continues to warm up indoors. Coach Paul Jones'took a limited squad to Knoxville last weekend for another All- Comers Meet at the University of Tennessee's Stokley Athletic Center and saw several individuals continue to improve. Freshman Chandler Muse established a new indoor record in the high jump with a 6'7" Lady Cats Lose By Two Playing in their last horns- game of the regular season, the WCU women's basketball team bowed to the University of Tennessee - Knoxville 48- 46 Tuesday night, The loss dropped the Lady Cats record to 10-5. Western's Karen Watson and Jolly Jones were standouts in the loss, hitting 22and 10points respectively. WCU coach Betty- Westmoreland attributed the loss to the foul shot success of Tennessee. "We outshot them in field goals 20-13, but their free throws killed us." The regular season finale for the Lady Cats will be against Appalachian State this Saturday. Game time in Boone will be 2:00 p.m. State tournament play will be held at Elon College beginning March 2. effort. Randy Helderman finished fourth in the 1000 yard run with a time of 2:20.4. Craig Goodspeed captured third place in the 600 with a 1:16.1 clocking, his best timing of the indoor season. The mile relay team of Ran- day layman, John Daniels, Le- Von Wilson and Goodspeed finished fifth with a surprisingly- good time of 3:34.7. WCU will be entered in the Tennessee Intercollegiate Indoor Meet, March 2, in Knox* ville. The Catamounts' outdoor season will begin Ma -ch 17 in a dual meet with Furman University in Greenville, SX. the agreement. Then David would get his degree 2-3 years later than if he remained at State full time,. Of course before Etevid makes a final decision he will most likely have to consider his various options within the pros after the season in concluded (the NCAA permits no negotiations until after the final game). His first consideration will be the Kentucky Colonels, who have sole draft rights within the ABA until April 10th. If David has not signed with Mike Storen (Colonel GM) by then, his eligibility within the whole league , is reestablished. If he turns down the Kentucky offer, he can then consider the ABA and the NBA team that will draft him„ The NBA will hold its hardship draft March 31st. Storen is in an excellent bargaining position for David. Kentucky is the ABA's wealthiest team, and while it has sole draft rights on Thompson, in March the team will be willing to go higher than later, when Thompson has a choice of teams. David's speed and agility would complement the Gil- more-Issel front line well. The present Colonel "other" forward, Walt Simon, is not considered a top pro forward by- pro standards.
