Susie Gardner turned in another record performance for the Lady Catamounts, breaking her own school record with a time of 18:27 on the 5 kilometer course (3.1 miles). Gardner also finished 10th overall and was the first Southern Conference finisher. Close behind was Rita Roberts with a time of 19:31, good for 28th overall. The women's team continued to show improvement from the top to bottom of their lineup. Kim Ewbanks was third on the team in 21:22, Elizabeth Ransom was fourth in 21:27, and Angie Pace fifth in 21:28. "In the four weeks since the first meet, there has been a big difference, the whole group has continued to get better," commented Coach Danny Williamson. The men's team was hurt by the loss of numbers one and six runner's Mike Helms and Chris Edwards to injuries. Williams said that he expects Helms to be back for the next meet and Edwards has already started back. Jason Whitworth led the men's team with a time of 27:13, good for 41st place overall. Right behind him was Donnie Reuss in a time of 27:35, John White in 27:38, David Hopkins in 27:43, Max Boswell in 29:01, John Miller in 29:55, and ShannonTriplett in 30:27. Anotherrcason Williamson cited for the teams having trouble Saturday was their work load right now. "They all have worked very hard these past two weeks. We may not be the best teams in the confer ence, but we're young and improving every day," Williamson commented. N.C. State took the team title in both the men's and women's races. East Tennessee State was second in the men's competition behind Seamus Power's second place overall finish in 25:06. Marshall was fourth in the men's competition. Marshall finished just 27 points ahead of Western's women to take first Southern Conference Team. The Catamounts next meet is the N.C. State Championships at Davidson on Oct. 19. After that comes the Southern Conference Championships in Boone on Nov. 2. Hall of Fame inductions on Parent's Day Oct. 19 WCU will induct six new members halftime of the UTC game Jimmy White Sports Writer Western Carolina University will induct six new members into the school's Athletics Hall of Fame during half-time activities of the Western/University Tennessee- Chattanooga football game. The 1991 inductees include Danny Tharpe, the late C.C. Poindexter, Clinton F. Dodson, Nora Lynn Finch, Anthony James, and Dr. Walter J. Durr. Tharpe is cited by many as the most versatile athlete in Catamount history, as he started in four sports during the 1960s. He started at point guard for four seasons for Western Carolina's basketball team and led them to three 20 win seasons including a trip to the championship game of the 1963 NAIA National Tournament. Tharpe was the tennis team's number 1 singles player for two seasons and led the 1964 baseball team in hitting. Tharpe was also the starting linebacker for the 1964 football team. Poindexter came to Western Carolina in 1931 as head football coach. He became the athletic director, head basketball, coach, and head baseball coach within a year of his arrival in Cullowhee. He directed the buildingof the school's first football field and bought a used school bus to transport his teams and drove the bus himself. His efforts earned him the title of "Father of Western Carolina Athletics." Poindexter died in 1958. Dodson was a guiding force in the development of the university and its athletics program. He retired from the university after 35 years of service. Dodson led the fight to save the Catamount football program following World War II. Dodson did not miss attending a Western Carolina home game for 57 consecutive years. Finch is a 1970 graduate who lettered in four sports (volleyball, basketball, field hockey, and tennis) from 1967 thru 1970. Finch received an NCAA 10th Anniversary award for outstanding contributions to women's basketball during the 1991 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Championship. James was an all-star performer in football and track and field from 1979 thru 1983. He held South- em Conference honors in football, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. Dr. Durr served as the athletic department's physician for the past 40 seasons. A former chief of staff at C.J. Harris Community Hospital, Durr retired from his private practice four years ago but continues an active involvement with the athletic department. Inductees for the Western Carolina University Athletic Hall of Fame are selected by a 10 member committee composed of representatives from various university associations and committees. Nominations are solicited and accepted from all the organizations associated with the university and the general public.
