Pika Colony Anticipates National Invitation Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity was founded in 1868 at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. From the six founders, the Fraternity grew to forty men and began expanding. The second chapter was chartered at Davidson College, and "after ten years there were chapters at William and Mary, Southern University, VPI, the University of Tennessee, Tulane, and Southwestern, These chapters were unified by their conventions, which drew up uniform policies of chapter operation. During this period four chapters weakened and went inactive, but were later reactivated by the other chapters that had grown in strength. Since 1950, more than forty new chapters have been added.1 In 1954 the PiKA headquarters building was erected in Memphis, Tenn. As an indication of the calibre of the men in PiKA more than two hundred living members are listed in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA. The Pi Kappa" Alpha Colony at Western Carolina began in the spring of 1965 as Sigma Phi Kappa, a local fraternity. During its first year it was second in the Bloodmobile Drive and second in scholarship among the fraternities here. Sigma Phi Kappa also adopted a Vietnamese boy through the Foster Parents Plan. In March of 1966, Sigma Phi Kappa became a colony of Pi Kappa Alpha. In the time since its colonization it has won honorable mention for its homecoming display. It has earned the scholarship trophy for highest scholastic average. The Colony bled a little and was first in the Bloodmobile Drive. In the fund-raising campaign for C. J. Harris Hospital the Colony took the trophy for the most money collected. Last but not least, the Colony ate its way to victory in Delta Zeta's ice cream eating contest. As a colony, Pi Kappa Alpha has certain requirements set up by the national office to meet in order to be chartered as an active chapter. Through good leadership and much hard work, most of the requirements have been fulfilled and the Colony is anticipating its installation as part of the national Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity.
