Zenyatta' Mondatta' New Junk...er...Punk The Police SP-4831 Zenyatta' Mondatta A&M Records Little excitement has come about on the crest of new wave except for some bonafide music as America's own group, the Cars. While for the most part dull things are happening in music in the U S. Europe once again polishes and refines everything we have to offer. Out of a handful of talent in the rock circuit there is one group who does their own thing and they do it well. It did not seem early on that The Police would last. But in Europe, the trend of bleached blonde hair and cynical humor is moving on as bass player/leader of The Police, affectionately known as "Sting" is a prominent sex symbol. The latest release by The Police, abruptly titled Zenyatta' Mondatta is a follow-up to last year's Regatta de Blanc. The album features an elaborate display of this trio's talent. As always, titles play an important part of the band's initial shock and certainly here there is no exception. For example, get a load of a FM disk jockey announcing the upcoming song "When the World Is Running Down, You Make the Best of What's Still Around" (one of the album's better songs). Or better yet, "by request - here is The Police with 'De Do Do Do. De Da Da Da.'" The album is mainly filled with upbeat tunes with a few space sounds that would probably make the Grateful Dead hide behind the pyramids. A punctual tune called ''Canary In a Coalmine'' carries with it what seems to be a major theme of the album - isolation. The disk is not exactly rebellious, but understanding^- disturbed. In "Bombs Away" Sting sings about the president: 'though his shirt is clean, his country reaks!' And a tint of humor almost always prevails in the album's overtones. In "De Do Do Do. De Da Da Da" Sting announces that 'these words are meaningless and all that's true.' Obviously this is not something contrived for boogie people: although some beats would make for classy disco. All the songs except for two were written by Sting. A song a piece is credited to the other two members. Andv Summers, the group's all imported guitar player, is responsible for the bizarre instrumental "Behind My Camel." The drummer, Stewart Copeland. provides another percussion virtuose called "The Other Way of Stopping" to end the album.
