  • Photo contest to be held on Mountain Heritage Day I I hi the second scar in a row the Jackson County Family 1 ife Council is participating in the annual Mountain Heritage Da) celebration scheduled for September 29 at WCU. Last year the Council sponsored an exhibit which included a slide -tape- show honoring the area. I his year, the council is sponsoring a photo contest which is open to am amateur photographer who is a resident of out region. Selected photos will be exhibited ai the Family Life Council booth on Mountain Heritage Day. In addition to being exhibited, various cash or mechandise aw ants w ill be giv en to winning photos. Am non-professional, amateur photographer of anj age who is a resident ol this ana may submit up lo Four black and while or color photos. There arc two divisions: Adult (age 17 and older) and children (1(> and younger). Additionally, there are categories for family photo albums and for snapshots. , Photos, except snapshots, may be of any si/e, but must be mounted. Hie subject of the photos should deal with some aspect of family living, such as family gatherings, family holidays, family portraits, or family work and play activities. All entries must be accompanied by a completed entry form and submitted to either Vallej Photo Shop. Highway 107 South in Cullowhee. or to Livingston PhotoShop, Main Street in Sylva, l>\ September 7. 1979. Entry forms arc available at these photo shops and at local stores throughout the county. (ash awards ranging from $10 lo $75 will be given in both the children's and adull divisions for photos judged in the following categories: Best in Show. Honorable Mention. Besi Color, and Best Black and While. A cash award will also be given for the Outstanding family photo allium. Merchandise gift certificates, provided b\ local merchants, will be given lo the outstanding snapshots in both divisions. Award-winning photos, except for family albums, will become pan ol the Family Life Council's permanent photo collection. Flowers and shrubs have been planted and are maintained lu dub members, as well as periodic clean-up efforts undertaken to help main Street (ullow hee look attractive. We appreciate the help we have received from the Cullowhee community and would like to ask your assistance with a problem. We have had lour large rhododendron bushes taken from the planting area adjacent lo the post office. These brushes produced beautiful blooms and will certainly be missed next spring. We would like to ask the people of (ullow hec to help us to keep these areas around the businesses clean and to request that Ihe plaining not be disturbed. Let's work together to make Cullowhee an attractive place lo live and work. The flowers are for the enjoymenl of all and we will appreciate your help. Il is clearly seen from the road as it cascades down a hundred fool drop in Ihe Cullasaja River. The river and falls arc named from lhc Cherokee word meaning "sugar water." The Civilian Conservation Corps |C.C.C.| has provided several parking areas from which Ihe falls can be viewed. Whiteside Mountain ll'his photo of Whiteside mountain was taken on jllighway 64 between Highlands and Cashiers. It's |panoramic view has been a favorite tourist attraction for vears. The mile-high peak is acccssablc by taking the first road on your left after passing approximately a lilc from there, park your car in Ihe clearing and a trail ■will take you to the lop overlooking lhc Blue Vallcv.
