Well. 1 never really gave marriage much thought before then. I'd always figured that I'd meet "Mr. Right" someday, but well, here was a chance to irv and find him. 1 thought. And so, this was in October, 1 pledged n> Delia Phi Kappa-the girls are so nice, they treated unlike I really was a somebody not jusl like 1 was a number. And 1 was actually meeting boys. Nice boys, who'd lake me out lo dinner or to parties. mostly fraternity parties, and walk me to the door and treat me like a lady. Or so I thought. It was December when 1 met Jim. Right before exams Jim was in my math class and he was a senior in the Gamma Alpha Ro's. I'd been lo parties at their house but had only seen Jim there a few times. He was a loner. 1 guessed. He didn't act like some of the other boys I'd met; he didn't seem like the type who drank too much or took drugs-I'd let him take me out the weekend before exams. And I'll regret it for the rest of my life. We went to a party at the Gamma house-there was a lot of beer there and a truck with a loudspeaker system. Jim called it a mobile disco--just like the ones in New York. We danced and drank beer and laughed until really late, and then I don't remember what happended. I guessed that I must have had too much beer, I never drank much before I got to college, and didn't realize it. But the next morning-I'll never forget it, it eats at me every time I think about men or see a magazine like Playboy-sex, that's all men ever want. Now I am going to tell you the truth about where I woke up. In bed, with Jim in some cheap motel. And we were both naked and I hurt a lot. I felt sick. Never in my life had I felt so ashamed of myself. 1 wanted to die. "How will 1 ever find 'Mr. Right' after this?" Mother had always told me to watch out for really handsome men. And Jim was so handsome. Jim k>oked so proud of himself. Smiling and acting like a "big man". All 1 did was hide in the bathroom and cry. 1 hoped 1 wasn't pregnant As it turned out. I was. After a good cry. 1 got dressed and told Jim to take me back to mv dorm. He laughed and looked so smug 1 could have killed him. bill 1 kept the pain biside and he drove me home As soon as I KM back lo mv dorm room I cried the matter.'" she asked. 1 told her the entire story--and then she lold me about the unspoken truth of what kind of girl reallv joins a Greek.
