Teetsell I Joined A Sorority To Find A Husband And All I Got Was Heartbreak A Startling Expose by Jane Doe-A Typical Co-ed. 1 arrived at Anderson Universitv as a freshman in 1975. It was a warm fall day. so typical of this region. My dorm room was small, but comfortable and I was sure that I would be happy in college. But after a few weeks, I got homesick--lonely for my friends, friends I'd grown up with, and the boys here at Weestern Puniversity were so different from the ones I'd known at home, well I was confused. And then I met Ginny. (Jinny lived on my hall and had pledged to a sorority—Delta Phi Kappa—and never had to worry about being lonely. All of her older "sisters'' treated her nicely, she dressed well and most of all. she was dating nice boys. Really, she always had dates with uooerclassmen who dressed sharply, had short hair and, well, they were the kind of boys that I wouldn't be afraid tor my father to meet-or so 1 thought. So 1 asked Ginny about her sorority, about the kinds of things they did, how much it cost and most of all. what sort of goals a member had to set. what kind of ideals a girl had to have, to be a member. The Western Carolinian is Western Carolina University's student-run newspaper. The paper was published as the Cullowhee Yodel from 1924 to 1931 before changing its name to The Western Carolinian in 1933.
