  • September 22,1999 FEATURES -f-a WESTERN <^T -. CaroliniaN 7 Black Sabbath, Tom Jones, and a Skin Tight Sheath LONDON, England — One of Great Britain's most popular performers will not be entertaining home crowds on New Years Eve. Tom Jones, the well known 59-year old Welsh crooner will be delighting crowds in New York City on the eve of the new year. Jones reportedly was never contacted by any British fans about performing. Jones was quoted as saying, "I waited for someone to come up with something in this country, but no one did." NEW YORK CITY—No one will ever be Marilyn Monroe, but you can dress like her. Christie's Auction House in New York has announced the sale of The Marilyn Monroe Collection on October 27 and 28. The centerpiece of the collection will is destined to be the Jean Louis original which Monroe wore in 1962 when she sang "Happy Birthday Mr. President" to John F. Kennedy in Madison Square Garden. The skin tight, flesh colored sheath has long been seen as the centerpiece of the Monroe collection. The dress was something that Monroe wanted to be sure that no else could wear. Monroe is said to have stood on a stool for hours with a glass of champagne in her hand while pattern cutters measured her every inch. It took one month to stitch the rhinestones to the gown after the initial work was done. On the night of the celebration, Jean Louis literally had to sew Monroe into the dress. There are still traces of the thread on the dress which he used to make sure that it fit every curve. The dress cost an amazing $12,000 in 1962. This time around, it is expected to sell for well over $100,000. SHEFFIELD, England — John Pretlove, a lecturer, at the University of Surrey, Thursday was quoted at a conference as saying, "[Within five years] we could withdraw from war completely and let robots shoot it out." Pretlove, a specialist in robotics, believes that future wars could be fought by robots commanded by humans. In addition to waging war, systems of integrated virtual reality could be used to control robots that could carry out other hazardous tasks, such as chemical clean-up and undersea exploration. Computerized teams of robots from five universities played in a volleyball tournament at the robotics festival, but Pretlove noted how most of the robots picked up other robots rather than the ball. He believes that were the robots controlled by humans such errors would not occur. Relations between man and machines will become much more peer to peer. We will come to rely on machines in a different way to how we do now," Pretlove said, compilsd by Alex Esmon www.crossroads-sylva.com for updates phone 631-3322 Main Street, Sylva Dining and Entertainment Calendar of Events Every Tue Ka^Oke w/Teri'Tet-ioke" Davis 9:00pm No cover EveryWed Open (W.c/3COUSflC jatVr 8:30pm No cover Iks, Sept 23 College Night ]0 W/DJWaleed "Coyote" J2I lover $5.00 under21 college ID required Fri, Sep! 24 hammerloop (jom/rock) 9:30pm $5.00 Sot, Sept 25 Information Network {mm 9:30pm $5.00 Mon,Sept27 College Night mm $m1]im $5,00^21 W/ D J C Love college ID required Thurs Sept 30 (Special Event)- Grayin' Melon 9:00pm WCU students Sponsored try UST MINUTE PftPpugiW; ^^f^-lf01 (.(ric^ Crossroads 631-3332. ROME, Italy — Sophia Loren, the most famous living symbol of all that is Italian life, turned 65 on Monday. Loren, an actress who can still wow the crowd with her on-screen presence, says that being a diva is just a job like any other. Ms. Loren was quoted Monday as saying, "When you go home, it's like leaving a job at the office." Loren's birthday made the front page of La Repubblica as if reassuring Italians that there is still something beautiful about Italy. Hospitalized for high stress levels last year, Loren seems to have recovered nicely and she shows no signs of retiring. Her latest book, "Recipes and Memories" is already a hit in the US and is soon to be published in Italy. HOLLYWOOD, California — It has been confirmed by Paramount that Richard Roundtree will be in the new version of "Shaft" due out in the Spring of 2000. Roundtree will play second fiddle to Samuel L. Jackson, but he will reprise his role as "The Private Dick who's a sex machine with all the ladies," John Shaft. It has been more than 25 years since Roundtree made his way down the streets of Harlem in the original "Shaft." Roundtree's appearance in the film is by no means just a cameo. One Hollywood insider quoted as saying, "It's not a cameo and he's certainly not some tired old gumshoe." CLEVELAND, Ohio — This year's short list for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame has been released with Eric Clapton, Aerosmith, Steely Dan, and Queen heading up the class. Black Sabbath, The Lovin' Spoonful, The O'Jays, and Lou Reed are also up for entry into the Hall. Steely Dan and Black Sabbath were up for entry last year, but didn't make the last cut. Last year's inductees included Billy Joel, Paul McCartney and Curtis May field. In order for an artist or group to be nominated for the Hall of Fame, performers had to have their first album released at least 25 years ago. LOS ANGELES, California - The networks are working with a new strategy this season: stick with a show for a while before axing it. Networks have been taking a lot of heat in recent years for thier tendancy to jump the gun when it comes to throwing out new shows which suffer an initial ratings dip. Both "Seinfeld" and "Law & Order" are examples of shows which had little support their first few weeks but gained solid fan bases as they progressed. Both shows are multiple Emmy winners. Need More Money? Ask Senator Barry Goldwater by Sarah Switzer Staff Writer Do you need a little more money for next year? Are you a sophomore or a junior? Are you pursuing a career in mathematics, the natural sciences, or engineering? If you answered yes to all three questions, you could be eligible for the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Established by Congress in 1986, the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation operate an educational scholarship program designed to provide opportunities for outstanding students with excellent academic records who demonstrate an interest in careers in mathematics, natural science, and engineering. In April 2000, the Foundation will award scholarships to students who will be college juniors or seniors during the 2000- 2001 academic year. In order to be considered for an award, students must be nominated by Western Carolina University. The deadline for all 2000 nominations is February 1,2000. The scholarship award covers tuition up to $7,500 per year. United States Senator Barry Morris Goldwater (born in Phoenix, Arizona, on January 1,1909) was the unsuccessful Republican presidential candidate in 1964. Lyndon B. Johnson, in the 1964 presidential election, decisively defeated him. Goldwater was elected to the Senate from Arizona in 1952 and served until his retirement in 1987. Senator Goldwater was a staunch con- servative. He became a spokesman for right-wing Republicans in their campaign against big government, advocating instead greater state and local powers. Goldwater opposed federal welfare appropriations as socialistic and sought to curb public ownership of utilities. A strong anti-Communist, Goldwater supported American military intervention in Vietnam and criticized efforts to achieve detente with the USSR. Senator Goldwater died on May 29, 1998 of natural causes. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a current full-time sophomore or junior and must be pursuing a baccalaureate degree, have a B average or equivalent, stand in the upper fourth of the class, and be pursuing a career in mathematics, natural sciences, or engineering. All interested sophomores and juniors should contact Dr. Gayle Miller at 227- 7646 by November 30. \
